يُعرف الصرف في اصطلاح الصرفيين بأنه "علم تعرف به أبنية الكلمات العربية وأحوالها التي تعرضُ لها غير الإعراب والبناء".
يتناول الكتاب مبادىء الصرف وأقسامه وخصائصه بأسلوب مبسط سهل دون الإلتجاء للتعقيد، يأخذ في اعتباره التفاوت في المستويات لدى الدارسين "وهو عبارة عن دراسة صوفية بتراث علمائنا السابقين الذين حملوا لواء لغتنا المجيدة".
يشتمل الكتاب على عدة عناوين تبدأ بمدخل يبحث في نشأة الصرف وأول من وضعه، فائدة علم الصرف وأهميته، معنى الصرف أو التصريف، الميزان الصرفي والغرض منه وفائدته، وزن الكلمة والكلمة المجردة، مزيد الثلاثي والرباعي ووزنهما، الإعلال والإبدال، والإعلال بالنقل، المصادر من حيث القياس والسماع، الإشتقاق، الصفة المشبهة، إسم مفعول، إسم الآلة، التصغير، أوزان التصغير أو صيغه، وطريقته، النسب، الفعل الصحيح والفعل المعتل، اللفيف المقرون وأحكامه، تقسيم الفعل إلى جامد ومشتق ... الخ.
