سيرة شعبية عربية طويلة، بالشعر والنثر معاً، ولكن الشعر يحكي جميع تفاصيلها وأحداثها، ذاعت في العالم العربي بأسره، ولا تزال مرددة فيه إلى يومنا هذا. وهي من ملاحم الفروسية المعروفة في القرون الوسطى، تتحدث عن هجرة قبائل عربية قيسية من اليمن إلى نجد، ثم إلى المغرب من طريق مطر، غلبت فيها القبيلة الهلالية على سائر القبائل القيسية، لأن الرياسة كانت فيهم. ولها ظل كبير بصفة عامة من الواقع التاريخي، وإن أضفى عليها الخيال الشعبي ثوباً فضفاضاً باعد بين الأحداث وبين واقعها، وبالغ في رسم الشخصيات.
محور السيرة هو الصراع بين الهلالية وبين الزناتي خليفة في تونس، وتنقسم إلى قسمين رئيسين، أولها يحكي ريادة الطريق إلى بلاد المغرب ويعرف بالريادة، وقد نهض بالأحداث فيه البطل الشهير أبو زيد الهلالي مع أبناء أخته يحيى ومرعي ويونس، ومروا في الطريق بأحداث وأهوال، وحبسوا في تونس، واستطاع أبو زيد أن يفر من محبسه وأن يعود إلى القبيلة في نجد، يستنفرها لتخليص الأسرى الثلاثة، وهنا يبدأ القسم الثاني الكبير من الملحمة ويعرف باسم التغريبة.
ويلحق بهذين القسمين قسم ينهض بالأحداث فيه أبناء الأبطال. وقد قسم المستشرقون هذه الملحمة على أساس الأقاليم التي حدثت الوقائع فيها كاليمن ونجد ومصر والمغرب، ولكن تقسيمها على الأساس الحيوي أقرب إلى المنطق لأن فيها حلقة كبيرة عن الأنساب، وخصوصاً عن آباء الأبطال، وحلقة عن الأبطال أنفسهم، أما الحلقة الثالثة فتحكي وقائع الأبناء الذين عرفوا في السيرة بالأيتام.
والشعب العربي كان ولا يزال شديد التمسك بسيرة بني هلال كثير الإقبال على مطالعتها، يجعلها حديث لياليه، ويمجد أبطالها ويتعصب لهم ويرى فيهم آماله ومثله العليا، ولا شك أن شخصية أخيل اليوناني وأوروما الهندي أو رستم الفارسي هي بالنسبة إلى قومه كشخصية أبي زيد الهلالي بالنسبة إلى العرب.
