ليس هناك شك في أن أفلاطون يعتبر واحدًا من أهم فلاسفة العالم ليس القديم فحسب، وإنما المعاصر نظرًا لأنه قد أثر بنظرياته الفلسفية كثيرًا خاصة في الفكر اللاهوتي أو فلسفة اللاهوت عن طريق القديس أوغسطين، ويرجع السبب في ذلك إلى أنه قد آمن واقتنع بالمذهب الفيثاغورثي - الأورفي وهو بذلك المبدأ الذي كان ينادي بالثنائية في الكون وفي الإنسان، وهذه النقطة هي التي برهن بها القديس أوغسطين، وكذلك القديس أنلسم على الطبيعة الآلهية للسيد المسيح، وكذلك طبيعة البشرية وهو ما كان له أكبر الأثر في تطوير فلسفة اللاهوت في أوروبا، وكان ذلك بفضل أفلاطون، أما من حيث هو فإنه كان التلميذ النجيب لسقراط أو فيلسوف بالمعنى الاصطلاحي والدلالي للفظ، وعلى الرغم من أن أفلاطون قد أخذ أكثر علمه الفلسفي من خلال ملازمته لسقراط، إلا أنه استطاع أن يكون لنفسه فلسفة هي في الحقيقة متعارضة بل وفي حالة تضاد مع فلسفة أستاذه، لكن يحسب لأفلاطون الدخول في قضايا الفيزيقا والميتافيزيقا بشكل أكثر عمقًا ودقة مما فعل أستاذه سقراط.
