اتجهت رابعة العدوية إلى حب الله، وتعد الأخبار المأثورة عنها والأبيات المنسوبة إليها بداية ما يسمى بالحل أو العشق الإلهين في تاريخ التصوف الإسلامي.. وبذلك فهي تعتبر ممثلة لبوادر الاتجاه الصوفي، وقد استخلصنا من دراسة آثارها وقصائدها، جرأتها في استبطان الشعائر والنفاذ إلى حقائقها وتفرغها الكامل لتطهير نفسها بما في ذلك نبذ الزواج، ثم التعبير عن حبها لله بشكل صريح يوحي بقيام صلات وطيدة تسمو على الثواب والعقاب.
ومناقبها كثيرة ومشهورة ترد في كتب التصوف والتراجم وأقوالها في الحب والتوحيد والمعرفة كثيرة، وقد سميت فيما بعد بشهيدة العشق الإلهي ولقد تصدى المؤرخون وأصحاب التراجم إلى جانب عريض من حياة رابعة العدوية حيث ورد عنهم بما سياقه: إن أبرز ميزة يمكن أن يمتاز بها القرن الثاني التي ظهرت فيها رابعة العدوية هو أن الزهد غدا مذهباً له خصائصه وأصوله وشعراؤه، وكل ما اتفق عليه، أنها ولدت في أسرة فقيرة، ولم يتفق المؤرخون على تاريخ ولادتها كما لم يتفقوا على تاريخ وفاتها..
وفي هذا الكتاب صورة أدبية وتاريخية صادقة للتعبير عن حياة هذه الولية الزاهدة، التي كانت في بداية نشأتها مولاة لآل عتيك، في البصرة، وقد ذاقت الفقر والحرمان أولاً، ثم انجرفت بعد ذلك إلى هاوية المجون واللهو، ثم أفاقت أخيراً ما غشيها من إسراف وتأثيم، فاعتزلت الناس وشؤونهم والحياة ومتاعها وعكفت على نفسها تطهرها بالعبادة المتصلة من أدران الفجور والرذيلة وتنشد الاتصال الروحي بالله للتكفير عن سيئاتها، والإعلان عن التقوى والإيمان للتخلص من كل أوضار الماضي، وقد أصبحت رابعة في المرحلة الثانية من حياتها مثالاً للطهر والعفاف والسمو عن الرذائل..
إن قصة رابعة، هي قصة التائبة التي كانت أول من تغنى بالحب الإلهي والعشق الرباني في الإسلام.. عاشت رابعة زاهدة، عابدة، تقية، مؤمنة، تنير الطريق بكلمة الحب، وتدعو الناس جميعاً إلى تذوق تلك الكلمة، التي تملأ الدنيا خيراً ونوراً.. وتملأ القلوب معرفة وعلماً، فعاشت وعمرت وازدهرت حياتها وأينعت وتكونت حولها المدرسة الروحانية الإسلامية التي ستمتد على التأريخ لتكون أكبر منارات الإلهام والمعرفة لبني الإنسان.
