"الجغرافية التاريخية" بين النظرية والتطبيق كتاب يركز الضوء على المنهج والأسس العامة ويثني بتطبيقاتها في إطار إقليمي. وتشتمل هذه الأسس على معالجة لتطور الظاهرات الطبيعية والمنجزات الحضارية في العالم القديم خلال عصر البليستوسين والحديث. أما الدراسة التطبيقية فهي عن مصر بخاصة والعراق وسوريا وفلسطين بعامة مع اختلاف في البعد الزمني من مكان لآخر.
وينقسم الكتاب إلى قسمين رئيسيين تسبقهما مقدمة في ماهية الجغرافية التاريخية ومغزاها ومدارسها المختلفة. ويقع القسم الأول في ثمانية فصول مزودة بالخرائط والصور، ويعالج الفصل الأول تغيرات البيئة في العالم القدين خلال عصر البليستوسين بينما يربط الفصل الثاني بين هذه التغيرات وظهور الإنسان, أما الفصول الخمسة التالية فتدرس تطور الحضارة البشرية خلال العصور الحجرية وعصر المعدن مع الاهتمام بأبرز أثر تغير البيئة في حياة الإنسان في أوروبا والشرق الأوسط.
ويبدأ القسم الثاني بدراسة تغير البيئة وتطور الحضارة في مصر خلال العصرين الحجري والمعدني ثم تتابع الفصول معالجة جوانب من جغرافية مصر التاريخية ومستعينة بالخرائط كلما أمكن ذلك.
