تعتبر الإعاقة بما تسببه من أزمات نفسية واجتماعية داخل محيط الأسرة أو عند مقارنة الفرد بأقرانه سببًا في إيجاد التحديات، وتدور تساؤلات كثيرة ومتعددة حول إمكانات ذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة، وحول قدراتهم على تأدية المهمات المطلوبة منهم كأفراد في المجتمع، ومع تطور التربية الخاصة لم يعد البعض منهم معتمدا على من حوله اعتمادا كليا، وإنما يمكن أن يقوم بكثير من الأدوار الحيوية إذا تم تدريبه وتأهيله لذلك بالشكل المناسب. ويعرف الطفل ذو الحاجات الخاصة بأنه "ذلك الطفل الذي ينحرف أداؤه انحرافا ملحوظا عما يعد عاديا سواء أكان من الناحية العقلية أو الحسية أو الناحية الانفعالية أو الاجتماعية، بحيث يستدعى هذا الانحراف نوعا من الخدمات التربوية تختلف عما يقدم للطفل العادي، حيث يحتاج الطفل ذو الحاجات الخاصة إلى تعليم خاص وخدمات تربوية خاصة.
وهناك من يجتمع لديه أكثر من إعاقة ويطلق عليه متعدد العوق. وتحتاج فئة متعددي الإعاقة إلى دراسات من نوع خاص تتميز وتختلف عن الدراسات المتعلقة بنوع واحد من الإعاقة، حيث إن هناك اختلافا في مجال البحث في حاجاتهم وبرامجهم وأساليب واستراتيجيات التعامل معهم، وهذا المجال لم يأخذ حظه من الدراسات السابقة وهو بحاجة إلى مزيد من التعمق لفهم خصائصهم، والوقوف على أهم احتياجاتهم، ومعرفة كيفية التعامل معهم.
