يدور موضوع الكتاب حول علم الأخلاق الإنساني، المتأسس أولياً على إدراك الإنسان للخير والشر. وبمعنى أخر المعرفة العقلانية للخير والشر من دون إدانة أنظمة السلوك الأخلاقي الدينية. وفي هذا السياق يقول المؤلف بول كيرتز: "... إنَ الإنسانية العلمانية الأخلاقية التي سأفصل الكلام فيها في هذا الكتاب مبنية على أساس النظرية العلمية للطبيعة والطبيعة البشرية وهي تقوم على أساس المعرفة العقلانية للخير والشر. إن الأديان الأرثوذكسية التي تجذرت في العهدين القديم والجديد والقرآن وما شابهها من الكتب المقدسة تستلزم، وهي تبحث عن تبريرها بالرجوع إلى مرجع متسامي، ينظر إليه من أنه مانح لقيم باقية في الذهن من قبل ذلك...".وفي هذا السياق يتطرق المؤلف إلى فكرة الخلق، والخطيئة، والخلاص، والإيمان عند الأديان السماوية الثلاثة، محاولاً إثبات أن الدين شيء والخلاق شيء آخر، قائلاً: ألم نصل أخيراً إلى اللحظة التاريخية التي يمكننا فيها أن نطلق، على نحو حاسم، الزواج التاريخي بين الدين والاخلاق؟ الم يحن الوقت الذي يجب أن تتحول فيه الحياة السلوكية جذرياً عبر النقاش النقدي الأخلاقي(...) ألم يحن الوقت الذي نساعد فيه على تسريع نمو علم أخلاق ذاتي ومستقل مبني على أساس الفكر النقدي ونضمن تاثيره من خلال إنشاء معاهد المستقبل؟..."
وعلى هذا المنوال يتناول المؤلف أهمية "علم الأخلاق الإنساني" في حياة الناس الذي يرى فيه أرضية أمينة للأخلاق اللائقة والرفيعة وللشعور بالمسؤولية الإنسانية؟ ويمكنه أيضاً أن يكون ملهماً لمؤسسة ثابتة من أجل حقوق الإنسان والرفاهية للناس أجمعين...
