يمثل هذا الكتاب محاولة متواضعة لتقديم رؤية جغرافية في أساسيات نظم المعلومات الجغرافية وتطبيقاتها في إطار تدريسي، والتي تحمّل علم الجغرافيا قسماً كبيراً من جهود عمليات بنائها وتصميمها وتطبيقاتها خاصة وأن عدداً من الرواد الأوائل في هذا المجال كانوا من الجغرافيين ذوي الاهتمامات الكارتوجرافية، الذين سعوا الى تطوير مجموعات الأساليب التقليدية كأدوات بحث من طور الى آخر ليساير ثورة استخدام الحاسوب وبرمجياته. تضمن الكتاب في فصله الاول مدخل الى تطور نظم المعلومات الجغرافية ومفاهيمها ووظائفها. وتضمن الفصل الثاني نظريات المعلومات الجغرافية ونماذج بنائها. وجمع الفصل الثالث المعلومات ومصادرها في نظام المعلومات الجغرافي. واحتوى الفصل الرابع على كيفية ادخال البيانات الجغرافية ومعلوماتها الوصفية وبناء قواعد المعلومات . اما الفصل الخامس فاحتوى على طرق ادارة ومعالجة قواعد البيانات في نظام المعلومات الجغرافي.
