عشت أخيرا-بعد انقطاع طويل- قرابة شهر على قطعة متوسطة من أرض الحضارة الأوربية فى رحلة سريعة كثيرة التنقل بين باريس وشمال فرنسا, وبين الحضر والريف, وكما أن المشاوير التى طحنتها على قدمى أثناء مقامى القصير-ولاتنس ممرات المتاحف- قد ضربت الرقم القياسى فى حياتى الماضية كلها, فلذلك كانت أسئلتى-لمن حولى- أسئلة خبط لزق أريد أن تقدم لى معلومات كثيرة فى برشامة أبلعها بسهولة, فالوقت ضيق وشهوتى عارمة, ورغم هذا العزر الشرعى فقد أحسست-كما أحس كل من حوالى- بأول فارق واضح بين ابن الشرق والحضارة الأوربية التى تكره الأسئلة كرها شديدا لأنها تكره الاعتماد على الغير كرها شديدا, فهذه الحضارة معنية-إلى حد الهوس- بجمع المعلومات وتبويبها ونشرها وبذلها للناس, فى متابعة سوية منتظمة, لانشتد لتتراخى ولا نتراخى لتشتد.
خط مستقيم ليس فيه انبعاج إلى أعلى أو إلى أسفل, نبع من هذا الهوس أنك تجد مراجع سنوية لكل المقالات الصحفية, فإن أردت أن تعرف استطعت أن تعرف بنفسك: بجهدك أنت وحدك, تعرف كل ماتريد أن تعرفه, بل تعرف كل مايمكن لإنسان أن يعرفه, بسهولة ليست بعدها سهولة, هل لى أن أسمى هذه الحالة بفن التستيف؟ نحن ولاشك نحاول التمرس عليه ولانستطيع. فالمعلومات عندنا رغم قلتها غير مجمعة ولا مرتبة, يخيل إلينا أننا نلتذ بالتقاعس, بشئ من الفوضى, بالعناء, لنعود فنرثى للنفس وهذا الرثاء هو قمة اللذة عندنا.
