تمثل دراسة الأسرة في علم الاجتماع نقطة اهتمام مركزية، ويمكن تتبع هذا الاهتمام تاريخياً منذ منتصف القرن التاسع عشر وحتى اليوم، بل إن التأمل في العلاقات الأسرية ومسائل الزواج، والتشريع فيها صاحب تطور المجتمع الإنساني منذ أقدم المعلومات التي وصلتنا عنه، حيث اتخذ صوراً عديدة انعكست في كتابات المفكرين وقواعد المشرعين ثم صيغت صياغة من منطق العدل الإلهي في الكتب المقدسة. وعلى الرغم من تنوع اهتمامات علم الاجتماع في السنين الأخيرة وامتداد مداخله إلى موضوعات عديدة ومعقدة مثل دراسات القوة والإيديدلوجية والتنظيم البيروقراطي، "إلا أن مسألة الأسرة لم تعد مكانها المرموق؛ بل إنه من الممكن القول، إن دراستها على المستوى المقارن والتعمق في مشاكلها المعاصرة واستجاباتها للتغيرات السريعة في المجتمع والثقافة، أصبح يشكل أساساً هاماً في مختلف الاتجاهات التي يزخر بها علم الاجتماع. وبالرغم من كثرة الدراسات التي تناولت الأسرة وربما من منظور البناء والتغير"، إلا أنها تختلف سواء من حيث الأنماط التي ركزت عليها، أو من حيث مدى شمولها واتساع نطاق المقارنة، أو من حيث المدخل والإطار التصوري الذي وجه الدراسة وحدد نطاق الاستنتاج.
ومع أن هذه الدراسة التي بين أيدينا تنبت أنماطاً مختلفة ومنظوراً أكثر اتساعاً وشمولاً من خلال إطار نظري وتصوري أكثر استغرقاً لعوامل متعددة ومتشابكة، إلا أننا نعتبر أن النتائج التي توصلت إليها يمكن أن تضاف كحلقة في السلسلة التي بدأت تتواصل في ميدان الدراسات الأسرية. وفيها حرصت المؤلفة على تجنب التفاصيل المتعلقة بالنظريات والاتجاهات، وخاصة تلك التي أصبحت مألوفة وشائعة ومتداولة في كتابات علم الاجتماع أو في الدراسات التي تناولت دراسات الأسرة من منظور التغير، ووجهت أكبر العناية لعرض وتحليل محكمين لما اعتبرته المؤلفة متصلاً اتصالاً منطقياً بالموضوع.
