حسان علي حلاق (1946 - ) هو كاتب وأكاديمي لبناني وُلد ببيروت عام 1946 بمنطقة الطريق الجديدة، حصل على دبلوم عال في الدراسات الإسلامية ثم ماجستير في التاريخ عام 1977، وبعدها حصل على الدكتوراه من جامعة الإسكندرية عام 1981، ألّف حلاق عدة مؤلفات وقد ترجم عديد منها إلى الألمانية والإنجليزية. وهو عضو في اتحاد الكتاب اللبنانيين. وحائز على جائزة جامعة الإسكندرية التقديرية عام 2007. متزوج وله ولدان وثلاث بنات.

ألّف حلاق أكثر من خمسين مؤلفاً في مواضيع تاريخية وإسلامية، ومن أشهرها:

لا يقصد بالعلاقات بين الشرق والغرب في العصور الوسطى العلاقات الحربية والعسكرية فحسب التي سبق أن تمت دراستها في مجالات أخرى، ولكن المقصود بالعلاقات في هذه الدراسة العلاقات الحضارية من علمية وثقافية وإقتصادية وإجتماعية وسياسية أيضاً بين شعوب المشرق العربي وشعوب المغرب من المسلمين والأوروبيين معاً وهي العلاقات التي يجب أن تدرس بعناية ودقة نظراً لأهميتها الحضارية ونظراً لأهمية التمازج الحضاري بين الشرق والغرب وبين الإسلام والمسيحية منذ العصور الوسطى عبر المعابر الحضارية.
ولقد كان لإنطلاقة المسلمين من شبه الجزيرة العربية إلى بلاد الشام ومن ثم إلى إسبانيا وبعض بلدان أوروبة وجزيرة صقلية، الأثر البارز في نقل الحضارة الإسلامية إلى البلدان الأوروبية وكان لإنطلاقة الحملات الصليبية بإتجاه الشرق الأثر الحضاري البارز بالإضافة إلى الآثار والنتائج الحربية والعسكرية.
إن هذه الدراسة التي بين أيدينا، تنطلق من ضرورة الإستفادة من الماضي لبناء الحاضر والمستقبل، فالحروب والصراع العسكري في الماضي لم يخلّف سوى القتل والدمار والتخلف والأحقاد، وبالرغم من ذلك، فإن العرب والمسلمين حرصوا أن يخلفوا ويورثوا الأصدقاء والأعداء العلم والمعرفة والثقافة والحضارة، فاستفادت أوروبا واستفاد الشرق والغرب على السواء من الحضارة العربية والإسلامية.
إن هذه الدراسة تمثل دعوة للتلاقي الحضاري بين شعوب العالم، والإعتراف بحقوق الإنسان، والإعتراف بالآخر، على أن يعترف الآخر بحق الآخرين في العدل والمساواة والحربة والعيش الكريم.
