حرصنا في هذه الطبعة على مراعاة جانبًا كبيرًا من هذه المتطلبات، حيث حاولنا متابعة أحدث التطورات في نظرية علم الاجتماع، فأضفنا إلى هذه الطبعة الثانية فصلًا جديدًا عن النظرية النقدية من الحداثة إلى ما بعد الحداثة، بعد أن أعدنا كتابة الفصل الخاص بالاثنوميثودولوجيا واقترحنا عنوانًا جديدًا له: "منهجية الحياة اليومية؛ كمنظور راديكالي". وكنا نحرص باستمرار على الاستعانة بالأمثلة الواقعية في توضيح الأفكار المجردة، وتناول المفاهيم والقضايا النظرية.
ولقد استندت خطة إخراج هذه الطبعة وتنظيمها إلى مبدأ التدرج من العام إلى الخاص، بحيث بدأ الكتاب بالتعريف بالنظرية (الفصل الأول) ثم اهتم بتوضيح علاقتها بالبحث (الفصل الثاني) ثم تطرق إلى مسألة تصنيف النظريات الاجتماعية (الفصل الثالث)، وبعد ذلك انتقل الكتاب إلى المستوى الخاص وأخذ يتتبع الاتجاهات الأساسية في النظرية (الفصل الرابع حتى الثامن)، وعالج البنائية التاريخية (الفصل الرابع) والبنائية الوظيفية (الفصل الخامس) والنظرية النقدية (الفصل الثامن). وحرصنا على تحديث قائمة المراجع العربية والأجنبية والرسائل الجامعية.
