في هذا الكتاب دراسة في سوسيولوجيا وعي الإنسان وحاجته لصفة الجمال. يعرض ويحلل علاقة الإنسان بالعمل وحاجاته المعيشية والسيكولوجية لهذا العمل منذ نشوئه ككائن عاقل، وتأثير التطور الحضاري في التوازن بين الدوافع النفعية والرمزية في مركّب الحاجة لديه وبين الدوافع الجمالية المهددة بالحصار عند الإنسان المعاصر.
فمع تطور الإنسان العاقل، حيث غدا الفكر يُطلق قدرات التفكُّر والمساءلة ويتأمل في واقع وجود الذات، بات هذا الإنسان يعي عبثية وجوده الذي لا معنى له. فما إن يؤمِّن هذا الإنسان القدرة على البقاء من خلال البعدين النفعي والرمزي في مركّب الحاجة لديه، حتى يشعر بالملل من تكرار هذا الدور، فتُقدم قدرات الابتكار التي يتمتع بها الفكر، بتفاعلها مع القدرات المعرفية والحسية، على ابتكار أداة الاستمتاع بالوجود، المتمثّلة بالبعد الثالث، أي البعد الاستطيقي بوصفه وعياً سيكولوجياً بضرورة تجاوز ملل الوجود وعبثيته.
للإنسان إذا، بتكوينه السيكولوجي، بعد جمالي يعمل على إشباع حاجته إلى التمتع بالوجود، لا على إنتاج خدمة أو سلعة مادية أو معرفية توفر له شروط البقاء ورمزيته فحسب. لكن هذه العلاقة بين البعدين النفعي والرمزي من جهة وبين البعد الجمالي الاستطيقي من جهة أخرى، لن تبقى سويّة، وسيتعرض البعد الجمالي الاستطيقي في حياة الإنسان للحصار أكثر فأكثر، وبخاصة مع التطور الحضاري وصعود الثورة الصناعية وما رافقها من مكننة وتلوّث للرؤى البصرية لمعالم البيئة المعمَّرة.
يتألف الكتاب في خمسة فصول: 1- حركة إرضاء الحاجة الاستطيقية ؛ 2- تنظيم وضبط رؤية التنوع، 3- الأبتمال؛ 4- القدرات الفكرية والحسية التي تحرك المرحلة الرؤيوية في الدورة الإنتاجية؛ 5- السرور والاستمتاع.
