الإلمام بتطور النمو العقلي عند الإنسان، ضروري لمعلمي مادة تعليم التفكير، لذلك استعرضنا في هذه الطبعة النمو العقلي عند الإنسان وتطوره إبتداءاً من عقلية الإنسان البدائي وفكر الطفل حتى الإنسان الراشد والوصول إلى التفكير المجرد، كما ركزنا على المقارنة بين الذكاء الحيواني والإنساني لنزداد فهماً للذكاء الإنساني، بالإضافة إلى العمليات المعرفية المسؤولة عن السلوك الذكي عند الإنسان، كما ركزنا على فهم الإطار العام للتطور المعرفي من خلال الجهود التي قام بها كل من العالمين (بياجيه وفيجوتسكي).
كما أضفنا نظريتين "نظرية التفكير عالي الرتبة" التي تجمع بين التفكير الناقد والإبداعي و"نظرية التدفق" التي تربط بين العملية التربوية والمتعة التي يشعر بها المتعلم، وهي تنطبق على الذين يسعون إلى الحصول على التعزيز الداخلي في أعمالهم ولا يلقون بالاً للجوائز المادية والإجتماعية التي تأتي من الخارج، وتلك صفة جمعت بين بناة الحضارة الإنسانية.
على الإنسان أن يتعلم كل شيء، حتى إدارة وجهه يميناً أو شمالاً بحاجة إلى التعلم كما يقول عالم الفرنسي (بياجيه). ولما كانت الحياة في تعقد دائما وجب على الإنسان أن يتعلم التفكير ليواكب التعقيدات المتزايدة في الحياة، وإذا كان الإنسان في الماضي يتعامل مع الطبيعة بشكل مباشر، أما الآن فعليه أن يتعامل مع بيئة وحياة وأدوات خلقها بنفسه وهي في إزدياد مستمر، بالإضافة إلى التفاعل مع العوامل الطبيعية وما ينشئ عن ذلك التفاعل من مشاكل معقدة ولعل (إزدياد حرارة الأرض) ليس إلا مثالاً على التعقيدات التي يتوجب على الإنسان حلها.
