استعرض الشيخ محمد البسام التميمي النجدي في كتابه "الدر المفاخر في أخبار العرب الأواخر" القبائل العربية في عصره وأماكن تواجدها وعددها وأسماء شيوخها، كما تطرق إلى ذكر شمائلهم وأخلاقهم وأسلحتهم وعدد فرسانهم وما تتصف به كل قبيلة من شجاعة ونخوة وحمية، إلى غيره ذلك من مكارم الأخلاق هذا.
قد قسم المؤلف كتابه إلى ثمانية فصول هي: الفصل الأول: في ذكر قبائل اليمن. وفي ذكر قبائل صنعاء، الفصل الثاني: في معرفة عرب تهامة وقبائل الحجاز، الفصل الثالث: في ذكر نجد، الفصل الرابع: في قبائل نجد، الفصل الخامس: في ذكر عمان وسواحلها وقبائلها، الفصل السادس: في ذكر الإحساء وقبائلها، الفصل السابع: في قبائل العراق، الفصل الثامن: في قبائل حلب، ويكون بهذا التقسيم قد شمل معظم قبائل الجزيرة العربية. دون ملاحظاته عن كل قبيلة بدقة وأمانة. ومما يزيد في أهمية هذا الكتاب أن مؤلفه استوفى-قدر علمه-ما للقبيلة الواحدة من أفخاط وبطون وتتبعها وفصل القول فيها، وأورد أخبار جميلة تدل على مكانتها مما هو متعارف لدى القبائل، أو أخبار سيئة عرفت بها تلك القبيلة، واهتم كثيراً بالناحية العسكرية كالشجاعة والفروسية والأسلحة، وكثيراً ما يفتخر بشجاعة قبيلة على قبيلة نظراً لتميز فرسان تلك القبيلة بشجاعتهم على فرسان القبيلة الثانية، وهكذا. وذكر معلومات عن أماكن استيطان القبائل بعد انتقالها من موطنها الأصلي وتاريخ المنطقة.
