اهتم العرب في عصورهم الزاهرة بالعلم والعلماء، فبرعوا في مجالات شتى كالطب والكيمياء والفلك، والطبيعيات والصيدلة، وقد عزى المؤرخون هذا التقدم إلى أكثر من سبب، أهمها التسامح الديني، وحض الإسلام على العلم وطلبه، فكان أن استجاب المسلمون لهذه الدعوة وشرعوا بنقل وترجمة ما وصل إليهم من علوم الأمم الأخرى، ولا سيما الإغريق والهنود. لكن هذا الاندفاع سرعان ما توقف وخبت جذوته في عصور الانحطاط والتخلف، فدالت دولة العلم وانتصرت دولة الجاهلية والجهل ونشأ حاجز حضاري بين الشرق والغرب ما زال قائماً حتى يومنا هذا، ولا شك أن لهذا أسبابه وعلله التي يجب معرفتها والعمل على تجنبها وتجاوزها، لذا فإن دراسة تاريخ العلوم عند العرب يشكل إسهاماً في هذا المسعى، غذ ليس الهدف منه التغني بالماضي القديم والبكاء على الأطلال، والنحيب على الماضي بل الاعتبار بما حدث، والتعمق في الفكر العلمي وتحليل مقومات الحضارة والوقوف على أسباب تشرب العلم الغربي والشرقي وكيفية هضمه وتمثيله ومن الإبداع فيه.
وفي هذا الكتاب يلقي المؤلف الضوء على تاريخ العلوم عند العرب فيتتبع مسيرة تطور العقلية العربية، والعوامل التي أفضت بهم إلى النجاح تارة وإلى الانحطاط تارة أخرى. وهو يهدف من وراء ذلك إلى دراسة الحضارة العربية من خلال دراسة فلسفتها والأفكار التي قادتها ووجهت مسيرتها التي كانت سبباً في نجاحها والوصول إلى حضارة أصيلة حقيقية.
