ربما تعد هذه الدراسة على عكس الكتاب السابق الإدراك الرمزي حيث صنفت حالة رينيه على أنها حالة فصام وذلك من وجهة نظر الفريق المعالج، وقد ساعد تشخيص ظهور أعراض الفصام واختفاءها في إيجاد التكنيك المناسب للعلاج. وفد تم إدراك المشاعر والأفكار التي سيطرت على رينيه مع بداية التشخيص. وقد تتبعت من خلال طريقة الإدراك الرمزي التغيرات التي حدثت في حياتها البائسة.
هذه المذكرات يجب أن تكون بدون أدنى شك تعليمات مفيدة لعلماء النفس كما أوضح فرويد في محاضرات في التحليل النفسي، أن هؤلاء المرضى قد تحولوا بعيدًا عن الحقيقة ولهذا السبب فهم أقدر منا على إدراك الحقيقة الداخلية ويمكنهم أن يكشفوا لنا أشياء لولاهم ما عرفنا بوجودها ولظلت مبهمة لنا.
ويرى البعض أن كتاب سيرة ذاتية لفتاة فصامية هو نيجاتيف (الصورة السلبية) لكتاب الإدراك الرمزي وموضح لما وراء علامات وأعراض الفصام وكما أن النيجاتيف ينقل الضوء والفراغ فإنه يمكن مقارنة استبطان المريض بانطباع المعالج عن سلوك المريض. وهذا التشبيه المتقارب يعطينا معلومات تمنع التقدير الخاطئ للمريض ودرجة الاستنارة عنده.
وغني عن القول أن رينيه بالكاد استطاعت أن تستجمع كل الانطباعات والمواقف التي حدثت لها خلا فترة مرضها. في الحقيقة كانت هناك فترة طويلة تعاني فيها رينيه من الفصام الكتاتوني (حالات التخشب) حينما يكون اضطرابها سببًا في استحالة فهمها لما يحدث حولها أو حتى ما يحدث بداخلها، ولم تبقى لها أي انطباعات إدراكية في الذاكرة خلال فترات من الهوس الشديد، وهذا هو السبب في سرد الاستبطان الداخلي الذي يبدو أنه كان شاهدًا على شفافية مدهشة. ولا يجب أن ننسى أن هذه الاستبطانات تمثل فترات معينة من مرضها ولحسن الحظ أن ما تبقى بذاكرتها هو الأكثر تشويقًا وإثارة من الناحية النفسية.
