النفس الإنسانية لغزٌ حار به البشر ولم يبلغوا كنهه وحقيقته. ومن المحاولات الأولى التي بذلها الإنسانُ في هذا السبيل تكونت بذور المعرفة التي قامت حولها مجموعة النظريات المكونة لعلم النفس. وما هذا الكتاب إلا خلاصة ما توصل إليه علماء النفس عبر بحوثهم المتواصلة لمعرفة دوافع السلوك الإنساني وبواعثه والعوامل المؤثرة فيه وكيفية ضبطه والتنبؤ به. والدكتور علي ماضي يضع بين يدي القراء كتاب النفس البشرية ليقفوا على نتائج التجارب التي كرس لها العلماء جل وقتهم والكتاب يقع في أبواب، الباب الأول يقدم لمحة عامة عن تاريخ علم النفس، بداياته ونشأته ليقدم بعد ذلك تعريفاً لعلم النفس ومجالاته وأساليبه ثم يعرض لأثر الوراثة والبيئة على سلوك الفرد. ويعرض الباب الثاني للأسس البيولوجية وللذكاء وتأثيره في تكوين النفس البشرية كما يبحث في الإحساس والإدراك الحسي إذ يتبين أن الإدراك الحسي عملية عقلية يتآزر فيها الإحساس والفكر وتلعب فيها الخبرة دوراً كبيراً. أما الباب الثالث فيدور حول التعلم والتذكر والإبداع. فالتعلم والتذكر عمليتان أساسيتان لدى الإنسان ولعملية التعلم شأن خطير في حياة الإنسان المتحضر لأنها تشكل سلوكه وتطور نفسيته لكنه يعتمد في جانب منه على التذكر الذي يعبر عن العمليات العقلية الهامة في حياة الإنسان. أما الإبداع فهو كل عمل يتفتق عن طريقة جديدة ويتكشف عن رؤية شيء ما أو علاقة معينة. ويتناول هذا الباب تعريف الإبداع وكيفية حدوثه ومجالاته وأثره في تكوين النفس البشرية. أما الباب الرابع فيبحث في الدوافع والانفعال. فالمرء مدفوع بدوافع تقوده إلى الإتيان بأعمال معينة. أما الانفعالات فإنها تعمل عملها في حياة الكائن البشري العقلية والجسدية وتركيبه النفسي. ويعرض المؤلف في الباب الخامس لدراسة الشخصية الإنسانية واضطرابات الشخصية وعلاجها.
