إن علم النفس التربوي هو دراسة علمية موضوعية تطبيقية لنظرية التعلم التي تهدف إلى فهم أساليب تعلم وتفكير المتعلم في ظروف منظمة صفية. وقد اهتم علم النفس التربوي بأساليب وأنظمة المتعلم وأساليب إدارته لتعلمه وذهنه بهدف تحقيق أهداف تحصيلية تساعده على التكيف والإنجاز. ويتضمن التفكير مهارة ذهنية تخص كل متعلم، لذلك يوصف المتعلم بأنه حيوي ونشط،معالج لمعرفته ولخبرته، ومنظم لأساليب التقاطه للمعرفة. ويعنى علم النفس التربوي بالطريقة التي تنظم فيها للمادة الدراسية، وأساليب تعلم المتعلم، والظروف البيئية للتفاعل مع الظروف والخبرات بهدف تطوير عمليات التنظيم المعرفي الذاتية والمعالجات الذهنية، وحل المشاكل وأساليبها المختلفة.
