والكتاب الذي بين يدي القارئ يتناول متطلبات مرحلة الطفولة واحتياجاتها، وأهمية مرحلة ما قبل المدرسة، وخصائص نمو مرحلة الطفولة، وأساليب المعاملة الوالدية، والسلوك السوي، وغير السوي.
ثم يتناول الكتاب مفهوم الاضطرابات السلوكية والانفعالية، ونسبة انتشارها، ومحكاتها، وتصنيفاتها المختلفة، واسبابها، وخصائصها.
ويتناول المؤلف في الفصل الثاني أساليب القياس والتقييم للاضطرابات السلوكيةوالانفعالية، وتتضمن الفحص الطبي، الملاحظة، المقابلة، دراسة الحالة، قوائم التقدير، والمقاييس والاختبارات. والفصل الثالث يتناول الاتجاهات النظرية في تفسير الاضطرابات السلوكية والانفعالية، مثل النظرية السلوكية، نظرية التحليل النفسي، النظرية البيوفسيولوجية، نظرية الوراثة.
ثم يتعرض المؤلف بعد ذلك للاشكال المختلفة للاضطرابات السلوكية والانفعالية مثل الكذب، العناد، الغضب، العدوان، السرقة، مص الأصابع، قضم الأظافر، اضطراب النشاط الزائد ونقص الانتباه، اضطرابات النطق والكلام، اضطرابات النوم، اضطراب الأكل، اضطراب الإخراج، اضطراب التعلم(صعوبات التعلم)، اضطراب النمو الارتقائي الشاملة مثل اضطراب التوحد، اضطراب الاسبرجر، اضطراب الريت، اضطراب الانتكاسة الطفولي، الاضطراب النمائي الشامل-غير المحدد,ثم يتناول المؤلف في الفصل السابع الجزء الخاص بالاضطرابات الانفعالية مثل اضطرابات الشخصية مثل اضطراب القلق، الاضطرابات الوجدانية.
