لم تضفر الدراسات النحوية، لا بفئة قليلة من الباحثين الذين قدموا بحوثاً لها قيمتها في مجال النحو، الذي ما زال أرضاً خصبة تحتاج إلى أيدٍ عاملة لتخرج منها نباتاً حسناً. والنحو في مصر والشام في القرنين السابع والثامن من الهجرة كان قوة زاخرة تحتاج هي أيضاً إلى من يميط اللثام عنها ويزيح الستار عن خصائصها ويبعث روح الحياة في أعلامها وهذا ما انبرى مؤلف هذا الكتاب للقيام به.
فقد كانت مصر والشام في الفترة التي يؤرخ لها المؤلف تكون وطناً واحداً استطاع أن ينهض بعبء الحضارة والفكر بعد الخراب الذي دب في جسم الأمة العربية والإسلامية بسبب حوادث التتار.
وفي هذا الكتاب يعرض المؤلف المدرسة النحوية في مصر والشام للبحث، متحدثاً عن أعلامها، منقباً عن آرائهم، دارساًَ لمسائلهم، وباحثاً توجيهاتهم، مبيناً لمذاهبهم. وهو يؤكد أن مدرسة مصر والشام لم تصطنع بمذهب معين، ولم تلون بمنهج موحد، لكنها كانت حركة قوية تغذت بلبان البيئة المصرية والشامية. والمؤلف يؤرخ لبداية الرحلان العلمية إلى العراق وأثرها في مصر، وحركة النحو في إقليم الشام ودور العلم في الإقليميين وأثرها الفكري. كما يعرض لحركة النحو في القطرين من أواخر القرن السادس الهجري إلى سقوط بغداد سنة 656هـ، ثم يعرض لأهم النحاة ونسب كل واحد منهم وموطنه، وكتبه وآرائه.
