يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى سد حاجة هامة في مجال الكتاب العربي الهندسي للمرحلة الدراسية الجامعية. تشمل أول مرحلة في مناهج الهندسة الكيميائية تعليم أساسيات الهندسة الكيميائية (Chemical Engineering Principles) حيث ينال الطالب قسطاً وافراً من التدريب وبصورة أساسية في مجال موازنات المادة والطاقة، إذ تعتبر هذه الموازنات هي اللبنة الأساسية لجميع المواد اللاحقة في هذا التخصص الهندسي سواءً في مرحلة البكالوريوس أو الدراسات العليا.
يكتشف الطالب مع تدرجه في مرحلة البكالوريوس (وبخاصة في مرحلة إعداد مشروع التخرج) أن الرسومات الخطية للعمليات الكيميائية (حتى بعد تبسيطها) تحتوي على وحدات صناعية متعددة. أضف إلى ذلك أن موازنات الطاقة بوجه خاص قد تتطلب إعداد الموازنات وحسابها باستخدام دوال رياضية متعددة الحدود (مثل دوال السعات الحرارية بدلالة درجة الحرارة). كل ذلك يجعل إجراء مثل هذه الحسابات يدوياً (حتى على وحدات صناعية قليلة) أمراً في غاية الصعوبة، وقد يستغرق ذلك وقتاً طويلاً مع ازدياد احتمالات الخطأ تبعاً لذلك. ويصبح استخدام الحاسوب أكثر ضرورة عندما تستدعي الحاجة تكرار الحسابات مرات عديدة للعملية الصناعية نفسها تحت ظروف تشغيل مختلفة. تنشأ هذه الحاجة بوجه خاص في دراسات الأمثلية (Optimization) وضبط العمليات (Process Control) ودراسات الحساسية (Sensitivity Analysis) كل هذت يجعل استعمال الحاسوب أمراً محتوماً عند هذه الظروف.
ويهدف هذا الكتاب إلى تدريب الطالب على استخدام حزم الحاسوب بمهارة في تطبيقات حل موازنات المادة والطاقة في عمليات الهندسة الكيميائية الصناعية مع الاهتمام بتحليل درجة الحرية قبل بدء الحل. وبناء على ما سبق فإن المرحلة المناسبة لتدريس هذا الكتاب هي المرحلة التي تلي إكمال مناهج أساسيات الهندسة الكيميائية في مرحلة البكالوريوس.
