أنا من الأشخاص الذين يعتبرون بيورت تاريخاً فاصلاً في حياتهم على أكثر من صعيد، ولم أستنفد رغم الاستعادات المتكررة لتلك الفترة القصيرة من حياتي، المخزون الكامن فيها.
ففي بيروت حصلت على ما لم يكن ممكناً لي الحصول عليه في عمان. لم تكن مكتبات بيروت، تتوافر فيه السجال، رغم الحرب، في الشعر والشعرية اللذين عرفتهما في أواخر الخمسينيات.
هذا وجه من وجوه عبقرية المدينة التي لم تتمكن الحروب والاحتلالات والنزاعات الدامية أو الانقسامات الأهلية من إطفاء جذوتها أو الاستئثار بها.. أو مماثلتها بمحيطها العربي. كان الشعر، والسجال حوله، رغم حرب السنتين الطاحنة، على وشك أن يستأنف طوراً جديداً تواصل نحو عقدين بعد ذلك وأمكن له أن يمتد إلى عواصم أخرة ويشبكها في صخبه. هل أعزو الخلخلة التي أصابت قناعاتي الشعرية في بيروت إلى إيماني الضعيف بهذه القناعات؟ لا أستبعد ذلك، رغم إشارة أكثر من ناقد وشاعر، م ن بينهم عباس بيضون، إلى أنني "بدأت قوياً" في قصيدة الوزن. وليس بعيداً عن ملاحظة عباس، ذلك الأسى الذي أبداه محمود درويش، يوماً، عندما علق على "طوري النثري" قائلاً إنني لم تكن لي مشكلة مع الوزن!
