طوال السنوات الماضية ومشاعر الإحباط والغضب من جهة ومشاعر التفاؤل من جهة أخرى تنتابنا. الإحباط لأننا لم نكن نجد حتى مقالة مفيدة نقدمها لأب أو أم يسألان بمرارة ما هي مشكلة طفلنا؟ كيف نستطيع مساعدته؟ لماذا لا يفهمنا أحد؟ والغضب لأن أناساً كثيرين في مجتمعنا يضعون الحواجز في طريق آباء وأمهات الأطفال معوقين بدلاً من أن يمدوا لهم يد العون والمساعدة، وينظرون إليهم بنظرات الرثاء وربما السخرية بدلاً من نظرات الدعم والتقدير لأن المهام الملقاة على عاتقهم والتي يؤدونها دونما كلل تثقل كاهل من ليس قوياً ومؤمناً. ومن جهة أخرى، فإن خبرتنا مع أعداد كبيرة من الآباء والأمهات تدفعنا للنظر إلى المستقبل بتفاؤل. فقد تعرفنا إلى آباء وأمهات لديهم أطفال معوقون ر يستطيع الواحد إلا أن ينظر إليهم نظرة احترام وتقدير ذلك أن عطاءهم لا ينضب ومعرفتهم ترقى إلى مستوى التطلعات.
وإننا لنرجو أن يكون هذا الكتاب أداة مساعدة تسهل عملية التكيف لدى الأطفال المعوقين وتوجه أسرهم إلى الاستراتيجيات الفاعلة لتطوير المظاهر النمائية لدى أطفالهم وتلبية حاجاتهم الخاصة. كذلك نرجو أن يكون هذا الكتاب مفيداً لمعلمي الأطفال المعوقين وطلبة التربية الخاصة. فنحن ندرك أن المكتبة العربية تفتقر إلى المراجع العلمية الموثوقة في ميدان التربية الخاصة بوجه عام وأسر الأطفال المعوقين بوجه خاص.
وقد حرصنا في هذا الكتاب على جمع ما نعتقد أنه يمثل أفضل المقالات التي كتبت حول هذا الموضوع. وحرصنا أيضاً على ترجمة المقالات التي تعالج قضايا أسر الأطفال المعوقين وأسرهم واستراتيجيات إرشادهم وتعرض لمصادر الضغوط التي تتعرض لها هذه الأسر وسبل التغلب عليها وتبين أهمية مشاركة الأسر في العملية التربوية الخاصة. كذلك تغطي المقالات قضايا جوهرية أخرى مثل العلاقات بين الآباء ومقدمي الخدمات واستراتيجيات تدريب الآباء وعقد الندوات التي تعود عليهم بالنفع والفائدة.
ثمة قضية أخرى تجدر الإشارة إليها هنا هي أن الكتاب لا يناقش قضايا أسر الأطفال المعوقين فقط ولكنه يناقش أيضاً بعض القضايا ذات العلاقة بأسر الأطفال الموهوبين. فهذه الأسر أيضاً لديهم أطفال ذوو حاجات خاصة ويجب أن تحظى بالاهتمام.
