يقول نزار قباني في مقدمة كتابه هذا: "إن شرح الشعر جماقه والتنظير له، أكبر أنواع الحماقات. هذا رأيي منذ زمن بعيد، ورغم تشبيثي بهذا الرأي فإنني لا أدري، ما عدد الحماقات التي أرتكبها على مدى خمسين عاماً من مسيرتي الشعرية، حين قبلت أن أكون واعظاً... أو معلماً أو شيخ طريقة في الشعر...
وبالرغم ألوف الأحاديث الصحفية التي أعطيتها منذ الأربعينات حتى اليوم عن الشعر، فإنني متأكد أن الشعر بقي دائماً خارج الغرفة التي جرى فيها الحوار. فكلما دخل صحافي، أو ناقد، أو رجل إذاعي أو تلفزيوني عليّ، لبس الشعر معطفه، وهرب من الباب الخلفي... وإذا كنت لا أجب تصريحاتي الصحفية التي أعطيتها... ولا التصريحات التي سوف أعطيها.. فلماذا أنشر هذا الكتاب الذي يضم بعضاً من الحوارات التي أجريت معي خلال السنوات الأخيرة، وأرى أنها تشبهني وتخترقني كأشعة الليزر.
ويتابع نزار قائلاً: إن سبب النشر يعود إلى طبيعة هذه الحوارات ذاتها، فهي حوارات تتميز أولاً بالبعد الحضاري، والثقافي، والإنساني، ولا تسقط في السطحية، والعدوانية، والابتذال... وهذه الحوارات، ثانياً: هي حوارات مواجهة ، وتحدٍّ واستفزاز... لا حوارات مجاملة، ونفاق نقدي، تمثله، روح الشلليّة والإخوانيات... وهذه الحوارات، ثالثاً: محاولة للبحث عن الجذور، والدخول تحت جلد القصيدة وقراءة النص الشعري، من موقف حضاري مرتفع، بعيداً عن الفكر الساديّ والشوفيني والجارانوفي...
