ولد في قرية جيلكا التابعة لجزيرة بوطان - ابن عمر - الواقعة داخل حدود تركيا في شمال العراق. هاجر مع والده ملا رمضان إلى دمشق وله من العمر أربع سنوات. أنهى دراسته الثانوية الشرعية في معهد التوجيه الإسلامي بدمشق والتحق عام 1953 بكلية الشريعة في جامعة الأزهر. وحصل على شهادة العالمية منها عام 1955. والتحق في العام الذي يليه بكلية اللغة العربية في جامعة الأزهر ونال دبلوم التربية في نهاية ذلك العام.

عُيّن معيداً في كلية الشريعة بجامعة دمشق عام 1960 وأُوفد إلى كلية الشريعة من جامعة الأزهر للحصول على الدكتوراه في أصول الشريعة الإسلامية وحصل على هذه الشهادة عام 1965. عُيّن مدرساً في كلية الشريعة بجامعة دمشق عام 1965 ثم وكيلاً لها ثم عميداً لها. اشترك في مؤتمرات وندوات عالمية كثيرة. كما كان عضواً في المجمع الملكي لبحوث الحضارة الإسلامية في عمان، وعضواً في المجلس الأعلى لأكاديمية أكسفورد.
يتقن اللغة التركية والكردية ويلم باللغة الانكليزية. له ما لا يقل عن أربعين مؤلفاً في علوم الشريعة والآداب والفلسفة والاجتماع ومشكلات الحضارة وغيرها. رأس البوطي قسم العقائد والأديان في كلية الشريعة بجامعة دمشق. كان يحاضر بشكل شبه يومي في مساجد دمشق وغيرها من المحافظات السورية ويحضر محاضراته آلاف من الشباب والنساء.
اشترك في مؤتمرات وندوات عالمية كثيرة تتناول مختلف وجوه الثقافة الإسلامية في عدد من الدول العربية والإسلامية والأوربية والأمريكية. و قد كان عضو في المجلس الأعلى لأكاديمية أكسفورد في إنكلترا. كتب في عدد من الصحف والمجلات في موضوعات إسلامية وقضايا مستجدة ومنها ردود على كثير من الأسئلة التي يتلقاها والتي تتعلق بفتاوى أو مشورات تهم الناس وتشارك في حل مشاكلهم.
وقف مع نظام بشار الأسد في سوريا خلال الثورة في عام ٢٠١١، وكان يرى أن ما يحدث خروج عن طاعة الإمام ومؤامرة تم تدبيرها من أعداء الأمة الإسلامية
تلقى بسبب ذلك اتهامات كثيرة بالخيانة وتشكيك في نيته وانخفضت شعبيته بشكل كبير وتم مقاطعة كتبه من قبل الكثيرين
تم اغتيال الشيخ خلال درس له في دمشق، وذلك خلال انفجار في المسجد ليلة الجمعة الموافق 10 جمادي الاول 1434, 21 مارس 2013.
Name: Mohamed Sa'id Ramadan, but famous with the name al-Buti.
Birth: In the year 1929, in the village of Ayn Dewar, Northern Syria.
Location: The Shaykh immigrated with his father to Damascus at the age of four where he resides.
Studies: The Shaykh received both his primary and secondary schooling at Damascus, and in 1953 he joined the Faculty of Shariah at al-Azhar University from which he graduated in 1955, securing a first class in the final exams. The following year he obtained a Diploma in Education from the Faculty of Arabic Language at the same University.
Engagements: The Shaykh was appointed a teacher in the secondary school of Homs in 1958. And in 1961 he was appointed a lecturer in the Faculty of Shariah at Damascus University. In 1965 he was back at al-Azhar University where he completed a doctorate with high distinction and a recommendation for a teaching post. In the same year he was appointed as a teacher in the Faculty of Law at the University of Damascus, thereafter an assistant professor and finally appointed as a professor.
In 1975, he was given the position of the vice dean at the same college, and later in 1977 as the dean. He has now retired but with an extended contract with the same university as a lecturer.
Academic activities:
1] Several of the Shaykh's religious and social programmes are broadcast via satellite channels, including: 'The New Miracle in the Quran, Islam in the Scales of Science, Scenes and Lessons from the Quran and Sunnah, and Quranic Studies.
2] He continues to participate in international seminars and conferences in various Arab, Muslim and European countries.
3] He conducts regular programmes in Masjid al-Imaan of Damascus (one of the largest mosques of the city). These 'duroos', as they are known, take place every Monday and Thursday. He also delivers the Friday sermon every week at the Grand Umayyad mosque of Damascus.
4] The author of many articles which appear in academic journals and newspapers.

فتحنا أعيننا ومن طفولتنا الأولى على حياة لا نعلم شيئاً عن مصدرها ومنتهاها وامتدت أبصارنا من حولنا إلى آفاق لا نعلم شيئاً عن جذورها الثابتة ولا عن فروعها المترامية المتطورة، ومهما سألت العلم فإنه لا يزيد على أن يضعنا أمام امتدادات زمانية ومكانية لا حصر لها. لقد عانت الحياة الإنسانية منذ أحقاب بعيدة تجربة البحث عن أجوبة مقنعة عن هذه الأسئلة، من أنا؟ ولماذا خلقت؟ وإلى أين أتجه؟ على شتى مستوياتها الفكرية والعلمية، بدءاً من الفلاسفة الأخذاذ ونهاية عند ذوي البصيرة الثاقبة من عامة الناس، فلم يصلوا إلى أي إجابة شافية، ولا عثروا على أي يقين علمي مطمئن.
وقد كان لا بدّ أن تنتهي هذه المعاناة بالإنسان، من جراء ذلك إلى جدار من اليأس، وأن تزجه في واقع طبيعي من القلق. وإذا علم الإنسان أن هذه هي الحقيقة التي لا نعرفها ولا مردّ لها، فإن من السهل عليه عندئذ أن يجتر يأسه ويسكن إلى قلقه، بل يستأنس به. وما عليه في هذه الحالة إلا أن يتسلى برغائبه النفسية وحاجاته العضوبة عن تطلعاته الفكرية وتساؤلاته الغبينية ولكن هذا الانصراف لن يستمر إلا إلى حين ويعود بعدها القلق من جديد، وقد أضيف إليه الحلل والتبرم بالقديم المتكرر الذي سئمته النفس، وأصبح مستعصياً على أن تطوير أو تجديد. وسيغضي به ذلك إلى حملة من الأمراض النفسية التي لا يمكن الخلاص منها إلا بالإجابة عن الأسئلة التي كان إغفال البحث عن إجاباتها مصدر ما يعتري الإنسان من قلق وصراع نفسي في هذا الزمن.
ضمن هذه المقاربة يأتي البحث في هذا الكتاب والذي يحاول الدكتور البوطي من خلال محاولة الإجابة عن تساؤلات الإنسان: من أنا؟ وما الغاية من وجودي؟ وإلى أين مصيري؟!! وذلك على ضوء طروحات فكرية مضاءة بمفاهيم إسلامية حقيقة مفادها بأنه لا طمأنينة للإنسان في هذا الكون بدون إيمان يضيء له مسيرة دربه في هذه الحياة فيتوصل من خلال إيمانه إلى معرفة قصة الإنسان والكون والحياة.
