انقسمت هذه الطبعة إلى بابين، الباب الأول يعالج الفكر الإجتماعي عند رواد علم الإجتماع الذين أسسوا العلم من حيث الموضوع والمنهج وميادين الدراسة والبحث، والباب الثاني يتناول المدارس الفكرية المختلفة لعلم الإجتماع التي تتصارع فيما بينها حول رؤية الواقع الإجتماعي وتفسيره، وقد اتبعت في معالجة موضوعات هذا الكتاب منهجاً يهدف إلى تناول الفكر الإجتماعي في حركته الجدلية، حينما تتصارع الأفكار وتتفاعل مع الواقع الإجتماعي ومع بعضها البعض الآخر، لنتنتج حركات فكرية متطورة. فآراء الرواد ونظرياتهم الإجتماعية عولجت تفصيلاً في حوارها بعضها مع بعض، وفي ضوء ظروف العصر الذي نشأت فيه، وهكذا، عالجت أفكار كونت سبنسر ودور كايم وباريتو وفيبر في حوارها مع كارل ماركس، وقدمت قبل ذلك استعراضاً لأصول الفكر الإجتماعي وجذوره، وأما الباب الثاني، فقد انقسم إلى أربعة فصول، تناولت المدارس المعاصرة وجذورها الفكرية، تناولاً جمع بين عرض آراء الرواد المؤسسين لهذه المدارس، وبين القضايا والمفاهيم الرئيسية. وهكذا، تناولت التفاعلية الرمزية، والبنائية الوظيفية، ومدرسة الصراع، والحركة النقدية في علم الإجتماع التي ارتبطت باسم مدرسة فرانكفورت، وأني أمل أن يكون في هذا العرض الشامل للفكر الإجتماعي والنظرية المعاصرة ما يفيد القارئ والدارس، وأن تجد هذه الطبعة نفس التشجيع الذي صادفته الطبعة السابقة، فذلك يحفزني باستمرار إلى المراجعة والتصحيح والإضافة، بما يحقق تقدماً للعلم الإجتماعي على الصعيد القومي.
