من قول الإمام علي بن موسى الرضا بأن هذا العلم منسوب إلى أمير المؤمنين علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه ولهذا الجفر الكبير والجامع الصغير، وقد فتح الله هذا العلم على الأنبياء، عليهم الصلاة والسلام، حتى بدءوا صفوف الكفار فرداً ولم يخشوا من أحد، وكتاب "الأصول الجفرية" وما تلاه في قواعد الجفر وعلم الفلك... هو رسالة في قواعد الجفر وهي مشتملة على مقدمة وفصول وفاتحة. أما المقدمة فهي في تحقيق الجفر واصطلاحاته التي هي من جملة الضروريات. وأما الفصول فهي في بيان استخراجات الآية واستكشافات رموز الماضية. وأما المقدمة فإنها باحثة في تحقيق معنى الجفر واصطلاحاته التي يتوقف عليها هذا الكتاب.
والجفر هو من العلوم الغامضة التي يعجز الفكر عن إدراكها. وهو في اللغة الشيء المخفي، وفي الاصطلاح هو المتفجر من ينابيع قلوب أصحاب العهود والشهود في محل مخزونات الغيب ومكنوناته التي ليس فيها ريب بحيث تكون على تحصيل المراد وكشف الحالات. الثاني في بيان الاصطلاحات التي هي من جملة الضروريات وهذه الاصطلاحات تطلب أنواع البسط العددي والبسط النوعي فأحدهما في بسط الحروف والأخرى في بسط التركيب، وهذان معمول بهما عند أرباب هذا الفن.
فأما البسط العددي فهو أن تبسط الكلمة حروفاً ثم تأخذ عدد ما لكل حرف منها على حساب الأبجدي ثم تستنطقه. وأما البسط النوعي المستعمل في بسط التركيب فهو أن تأخذ عدد شيء أردته، فتجمع ذلك العدد جميعه فتستنطقه ثم تجمع الحروف المستنطقة بأسرها فيكون البسط العددي في تركيب بسط الحروف عبارة عن تلفظ الحروف، فذلك بسط ظاهر، وهذا البسط لفظي ظاهر.
وأما البسط الطبيعي فهو عبارة عن الحروف المربعة والمقوية التي توافق المطلوب بحسب الطبع كما الحروف النارية مريبة للأحرف الهوائية وبالعكس، والأحرف المائية مريبة للأحرف الترابية وبالعكس. والبسط الغريزي عبارة عن الطالبية، يعني أن كل واحد من الأحرف النارية تطلب الهوائية.
