في هذا الكتاب رحلةٌ قامت بها الطبيبة الفرنسية كلودي فايان إلى اليمن سنة 1951 حيث عملت هناك مع قلةٌ من الأطباء الإيطاليين ضمن البعثة الطبية الفرنسية. ولقد واجهت الكثير من الصعوبات بسبب تراكم العمل ونقص الأدوية. ثم بعد سنة ونص من العمل في اليمن عادت إلى بلدها حاملة لذكريات جميلة وحزينة لهذا البلد العربي الذي يتميز بجباله القاسية التي تطل على المحيط الهندي.
وقد كان السفر إلى اليمن آنذاك يعد بحثاً عن المتاعب، حيث الحياة في اليمن ليسن هنية يسيرة، فليس هناك أثرٌ للراحة ولا الحرية، والوسائل المهنية ضئيلة، والعلاقات مع السلطات المحلية سريعة التأثر وضعيفة. وقد مات أحد أعضاء البعثة الفرنسية السابقة، وعاد الآخرون ساخطين بعد حوادث مزعجة خطيرة. إلا أن أحلام الصبا دعت الطبيبة فايان إلى الإرتحال. وبعد سنوات كثيرة وبالرغم من مسؤولياتها العائلية والمهنية الكثيرة، لم تستطع نسيان حلمها القديم في السفر لذلك بحثت عن وظيفة طبيبة في الخارج أو بعثة، وكنت اليمن هي سبيلها الوحيد لتحقيق حلمها!!!
