من المعروف أنه لا يوجد كتب خلال القرن الماضي تناولت القبائل العربية ببحث موثق ودقيق، ربما لأن أكثرها بحوث فردية واجتهادات أشخاص، ناهيك أن معظمها لا يتناول دراسة القبائل بقدر ما كان يتناول موضوعات مختلفة، لذا فإن المعلومات عن القبائل فيها نتف لا تشفي الغليل ولا تروي العليل، كما أن أغلبها اجترار لما سبق من كتب المؤرخين، ونضرب مثالاً على كتاب "البدو" لأبنهايم الألماني الذي ينقل عن كارلو غوارماني، وهيس، وفيلبي، وغيره ممن سبقوه.
ولكن كتاب (المعجم الجغرافي) ينقل عن مصادر مختلفة من رواة معاصرين، وشهود عيان على بعض الأحداث التي وقعت في تلك الفترة، وإن كانت تلك المعلومات التي جمعوها معلومات استخبارية جمعت عن طريق جواسيسهم وعيونهم في المناطق المختلفة، إلا أن أهميتها تكمن بأنها أوردت معلومات نفيسة جداً عن قبيلة عتيبة موضوع هذا الجزء جاء بعضها على شكل تقارير رتبت في جداول تتضمن أسماء فروع وشيوخ قبيلة عتيبة، قل أن توجد في مصدر آخر، كما جاء ذكر لكبار الأفخاذ وعدد أسلحتهم ومرابط خيلهم وبنادقهم ومكان سكناهم وأماكن انتجاعهم.. الخ.
ولم يكن الهدف من بعض هذه التقارير خدمة أبناء البادية من عتيبة وغيرهم، وإنما سبرهم لقوة الملك عبد العزيز التي كانت تقلق مضاجع أعدائه وخصومه أثناء توحيد هذه الدولة المباركة.
صدر كتاب المعجم الجغرافي للقبائل العربية عام 1996م، وكان نصيب قبيلة عتيبة في المجلد الثاني بين صفحتي (55-2119، وهي المادة التي استخلصها الباحث وقام بتعريبها والتعليق عليها.
وتحوي مادة عتيبة وحدها على كثير من المعلومات المهمة حول قبيلة عتيبة وبنائها القبلي وعلاقاتها بجيرانها في نجد وفي الحجاز، وذكر مشايخها وكبار رجالها، وعدد المقاتلة فيها، وعتادهم، وخيلهم، وأماكن انتجاعهم، صيفاً وشتاءً، وأماكن استيطانهم في الهجر.
قام الباحث بالتعليق على ما جاء فيه من معلومات، مصححاً ومؤيداً أحياناً، وصولاً إلى الدقة والموضوعية.
والكتاب يعد إضافة جديدة لتاريخ القبائل في الجزيرة العربية في تاريخها الحديث، ومعلوماته تنشر معربة لأول مرة.
