إن أدب الأطفال والقيم التربوية توءمان لا ينفصلان فكل منهما يكمل الآخر، يتأثر ويؤثر فيه، وأدب الأطفال جزء من ثقافة المجتمع، والقيم تتأثر بالتطور والتغيير، بل أن الأهداف في المجتمع ترتبط بالسلم القيمي في المجتمع نفسه، ولهذا فإن أي تغيير في السلم القيمي نتيجة التغيير الاجتماعي، فإنه سيرافق بتغيير الأهداف بما يتناسب مع هذا التغيير القيمي، فالعلاقة وطيدة بين أدب الأطفال عامة وشعر الأطفال خاصة، وبين القيم التربوية السائدة في المجتمع، ولهذا فكلما كان الأديب قادراً على اتساع رقعة السلم القيمي أسهم في خلق الجيل القادر على بناء المجتمع وتطويره وتقدمه.
يأتي الكتاب في هذا الإطار حيث يتناول دراسة تتضمن مفهوم الطفولة ونموها وحاجاتها وثقافتها وارتقاء القيم التربوية فيها وجاء ذلك ضمن فصول أربعة في الفصل الأول دار الحديث حول الطفولة ومفهومها ومراحلها، وتم الوقوف عند نمو الأطفال وحاجاتهم الأساسية بالإضافة إلى ثقافة الأطفال ودور أدب الأطفال في الاتصال الثقافي، وتناول الفصل الثاني أدب الأطفال من حيث تعريفه ومعناه وأهميته ونشأته عالمياً وعربياً، وتأثره بالنظام السياسي العالمي، وتم الوقوف عند شعر الأطفال من حيث تعريفه ومعناه وسماته وأشكاله وواقعه في الوطن العربي عامة وفي سوريا خاصة بالإضافة إلى قنوات وجوده في الكتاب والمجلات والمجموعات الشعرية، ودار الحديث في الفصل الثالث حول القيم التربوية من حيث معناها وتعريفها وتصنيفها ووسائط اكتسابها والفرق بينها وبين الاتجاهات وإشكال قياسها وارتقائها وأساليب تغيرها ومجالات تطبيقها بالإضافة إلى تواجدها في أدب الأطفال في القطر العربي السوري، وتم التوصل في الفصل الرابع والأخير إلى تصميم معيار القيم التربوية حيث تضمن حديثاً عن حاجة المجتمع العربية إلى معيار القيم التربوية، وبين الباحث الأسس التي استند إليها في بناء معيار القيم التربوية، عارضاً للخطوات المتبعة في بنائه.
