لا تكمن أهمية غسان كنفاني في أنه يرسم الروح في هوانه وسقوطه، أي يؤرخ نفسانياً لتطور هذا الروح في متاهة ترديه، فقط، بل تأتي أهميته كذلك من أول كتاب عربي إستطاع أن ينقل الكارثة الفلسطينية إلى حيز الرواية التي يتحقق لها تكامل الشروط الفنية. وفي أنه كان أول من قدم فهماً تطبيقياُ عميقاً للتراجيديا. فجوهر الرواية لديه – بل والأقصوصة أيضاً – إنها تُخضع التاريخ للمحاكمة، وإنها تدينه، لا كعدوان فحسب، بل وكخنوع أيضاً تدينه في طرفيه النافي والمنفي.
من هنا كان التراجيدي ذا طبيعة تاريخية في نظر غسان، وكانت الألياف المؤسسة للرواية تاريخية هي الأخرى. ولما كان غسان لا يدين برهة النفي وحدها، بل كذلك برهة الإنتفاء، فقد سيطرت عقدة الذنب على معظم أبطاله بكل وضوح.
