يمكن القول أن هذا الكتاب موجه إلى مدمنوا القراءة، ومتذوقوها، وعاشقوها، كما هو مؤلف الكتاب هنري ميللر في كتابه الذائع الصيت "الكتب في حياتي" ربما لا يكون الكاتب يقوَم حياته من خلال قراءته، لكنه كان قارئاً من الطراز الأول، كان مدمن قراءة مثلما هو مدمن تنقل وترحال وعلاقات حميمة، غير أنه يعترف بأن الهدف من تأليف كتابه هذا، هو أن يسرد قصة حياته من خلال حكاياته عن الكتب بوصفها تجربة حيوية تجعله يتفحص ذاته، فالكتب ملقاة أمامنا كأشياء الحياة الأخرى وظاهراتها، وعلينا إما أن نتعاطى معها أو نتجاهلها، ولم يكن بمستطاع ميللر أن يتجاهلها حين التقاها مبكراً في طريقه، يقول: "إنني اعتبر لقاءاتي بالكتب أقرب شبهاً بلقاءاتي مع ظواهر أخرى في الحياة أو الفكر، اللقاءات كلها مرتبة وليست منعزلة، وبهذا المعنى، حصراً، تشكيل الكتب جزءاً لا يتجزأ من الحياة كالأشجار، والنجوم والروث. وأنا لا أجلَها بحد ذاتها لا أضع المؤلفين في أية خانة خاصة، أو متميزة، إنهم كالأشخاص الآخرين، لا أفضل، ولا أسوأ. إنهم يستغلَون القدرات التي وهبوا، كما يفعل أي نوع أخر من الكاثنات البشرية".
عندما تنتهي من قراءة هذا الكتاب تكون قد عرفت غالبية كتَاب العالم من المشاهير وأعمالهم الأدبية والفكرية والفلسفية والتاريخية، وكيف نظر ميللر إلى كل واحد منهم، أو كيف قرأهم بعين الشاعر والأديب والإنسان قبل كل شيء.
