مما جاء في مقدمة الكتاب :
مرت المرأة البحرينية في حياتها الاجتماعية والسياسية عبر قرن من الزمان بحالات متباينة وظروف صعبة· فقد انحصر دورها في العقود الأولى من القرن العشرين، أي قبل التحولات الاقتصادية والتعليمية والسياسية التي شهدتها مملكة البحرين على تدبير شئون المنزل، وتربية الأطفال، فبقيت حبيسة المنزل لا تغادره نظراً لانشغالها بتدبير أموره، كما أن العادات والتقاليد وثقاف مما جاء في مقدمة الكتاب :
مرت المرأة البحرينية في حياتها الاجتماعية والسياسية عبر قرن من الزمان بحالات متباينة وظروف صعبة· فقد انحصر دورها في العقود الأولى من القرن العشرين، أي قبل التحولات الاقتصادية والتعليمية والسياسية التي شهدتها مملكة البحرين على تدبير شئون المنزل، وتربية الأطفال، فبقيت حبيسة المنزل لا تغادره نظراً لانشغالها بتدبير أموره، كما أن العادات والتقاليد وثقافة المجتمع آنذاك تحتم على المرأة البقاء في منزلها وعدم الخروج منه إلا في حالة الضـــرورة·
وعلى الرغم من تلك الظروف الصعبة التي عاشتها المرأة البحرينية في أوائل القرن المنصرم، إلا أنها زاولت بعض الحرف اليدوية التقليدية من داخل المنزل مستفيدة من وقتها الطويل· وعملت بعض النسوة على مساعدة أزواجهن في المزارع لجني الثمار وجمع الحطب ونقله واستخدامه كوقود للطهي· كما أدى عدم توافر المياه في المنازل إلى خروج المرأة إلى العيون الطبيعية والجداول والغدران لغسل الملابس والأواني، وجلب الماء إلى المنزل، وكان ذلك المتنفس الشرعي الوحيد لخروج المرأة من دارها·
صمدت المرأة البحرينية أمام تحديات كثيرة إبان العقود الثلاثة الأولى من القرن العشرين، وكان أكثرها قساوة على المرأة فترة الغوص التي تستمر من ثلاثة إلى أربعة أشهر من كل عام، حيث يغيب معظم الرجال عن المنازل في تلك الفترة بحثاً عن اللؤلؤ، وتبقى المرأة البحرينية تدير لوحدها شئون المنزل، وتتكفل بتربية الأطفال والمحافظة عليهم طيلة فترة غياب ولي الأمر، وهي مهمة شاقة وبالغة الأهمية·
