من أجواء الرواية: «حتى نتلمس طريقاً إلى أجوائها المفعمة بالأحداث المثيرة: أخرج العقيد آلة صغيرة تشبه قُمع الخياط من الجيب الصدري لسترته العسكرية، ووضعها أمامه، ثم أشعل سيجارة أخرى وشرع في التدخين ببطء وهدوء. وقبل أن أعرف ما سوف يفعل بي، غشيتني غمامة باردة، وخرجت من مجا تتناول هذه الرواية الجرائم الفظيعة التي ترتكبها الأنظمة العسكرية في رعاياها الأبرياء في الكثير من البلدان.
من أجواء الرواية: «حتى نتلمس طريقاً إلى أجوائها المفعمة بالأحداث المثيرة: أخرج العقيد آلة صغيرة تشبه قُمع الخياط من الجيب الصدري لسترته العسكرية، ووضعها أمامه، ثم أشعل سيجارة أخرى وشرع في التدخين ببطء وهدوء. وقبل أن أعرف ما سوف يفعل بي، غشيتني غمامة باردة، وخرجت من مجال الإحساس... تركت جسدي وانسلخت منه روحاً مرهقة، ثم انهالت عليَّ كل ذكريات الماضي... تتابعت أحداثها في مخيلتي منتظمة وواضحة... تداعت حرائق الأيام ورماد الليالي... كانت تبرق في لمحات سريعة.
انفتحت أبواب ذاكرتي تترى منها الذكريات شريطاً متصلاً... سنوات الثانوية والجامعة... يوم كنت مثل فراشة ملونة... كان طيف ليلي يتبدى لي كأنه يتهادى على بسط السحاب... استيقظت قصة الأمس أكثر عنفواناً، وتماوجت مع قصة اليوم التي ما زالت متواصلة، ولا أعلم لها نهاية وأنا في ربقة هذا المأزق الذي يسمى معتقلاً.
المعتقلات... ورود سوداء شائكة انبثقت في أذهان المجتمعات البدائية والمتحضرة على حد سواء... قطع مسيجة تخفي فيها وحشيتها المقيتة.
المعتقل... إنه قدري وقبري أيضاً، حيث سأتوارى عن الحياة مع كل ما عتّقته من أحزان في جب قلبي العميق.
ألهذا الحد كنت تعشق ولائم الحزن الباذخة يا عباس؟ أم وحدها نبوءة الاسم تكفي؟
أجل... هذا أنا، رجل تحاصره دائرة النار، ويطوقه سحاب الموت الذي قد يقصف في أي لحظة برعود العذاب وسياط الجحيم».
