على مدار قرن كامل من الحملة الفرنسية على مصر إلى دخول القوات الفرنسية دمشق في عام 1920, كان العالم العربي والإسلامي يشكل محور السياسة الفرنسية ولا سيما فيما يتعلق بمصر وسوريا والجزائر وسوريا ولبنان وكان الفرنسيون ورثة الثورة, يغطون نواياهم الاستعمارية بأن لهم "رسالة تمدينية" يجب أن تفضي إلى إنشاء دول أو عدة دول قومية, أو ممالك عربية. و لكن هذه المحاولات فشلت لعدة أسباب منه على مدار قرن كامل من الحملة الفرنسية على مصر إلى دخول القوات الفرنسية دمشق في عام 1920, كان العالم العربي والإسلامي يشكل محور السياسة الفرنسية ولا سيما فيما يتعلق بمصر وسوريا والجزائر وسوريا ولبنان وكان الفرنسيون ورثة الثورة, يغطون نواياهم الاستعمارية بأن لهم "رسالة تمدينية" يجب أن تفضي إلى إنشاء دول أو عدة دول قومية, أو ممالك عربية. و لكن هذه المحاولات فشلت لعدة أسباب منها تحركات بريطانيا العظمى المضادة لها و انتصار المشروع الاستعماري الذي يتحول مع قيلم الجمهورية الثالثة إلى ادعاء تفوق عنصري. و في عام 1920 ، عندما أنشأ الملك فيصل أخيرا مملكة عربية.
على أن هذه الفصول التاريخية إنما تميز تحولا أساسيا للمجتمعات العربية . فهذه المجتمعات الراغبة في اللحاق بالغرب حتى يتسنى لها التصدي له من مواقع أقوى ، إنما تهجر التقيبمات الوظيفية المميزة للنظام العثماني القيم لكي تكتشف من جديد ، في سياق البحث عن مواطنة مشتركة تجمع بين العثمانيين ، الواقع الاثني الذي كان منسيا حتى ذلك الحين.
وفي هذا الكتاب يستعرض المؤلف لأول مرة من خلال الوثائق الدور الذي لعبته فرنسا خلال القرن التاسع عشر على إثر حملة نابليون إلى مصر والمشروع الفرنسي الذي طرحته الدبلوماسية الفرنسية لدور مصر والعالم العربي.
يكشف هذا الكتاب بشكل مفصل و من منظار فرنسي التحركات التي قامت بها فرنسا و مداخلاتها و مبرراتها في كل من مصر و الجزائر و سوريا و لبنان.
