يقدّمُ هذا الكتابُ قصّةً بديلةً عن فجر الدولة العراقية؛ إنه يقدّمُ أطروحةً ترى أن دولةَ العراق الحديثة ظهرت إلى الوجود قبل تتويج الملك فيصل. فالكتاب يقدّم كتابة تاريخية لحدث ثورة 1920 استناداً إلى الوثائق البريطانية الأصلية ومذكراتِ شهود العيان من بريطانيين وعراقيين، وهو بهذا يواجهُ آثارَ نزعة التنقيح التاريخي التي تبنّتْها الحكوماتُ المستبدّة والأفرادُ المزيّفون في إعادةِ يقدّمُ هذا الكتابُ قصّةً بديلةً عن فجر الدولة العراقية؛ إنه يقدّمُ أطروحةً ترى أن دولةَ العراق الحديثة ظهرت إلى الوجود قبل تتويج الملك فيصل. فالكتاب يقدّم كتابة تاريخية لحدث ثورة 1920 استناداً إلى الوثائق البريطانية الأصلية ومذكراتِ شهود العيان من بريطانيين وعراقيين، وهو بهذا يواجهُ آثارَ نزعة التنقيح التاريخي التي تبنّتْها الحكوماتُ المستبدّة والأفرادُ المزيّفون في إعادةِ كتابةِ تاريخِ حدثٍ ما بنزعة تنقيحٍ مضادة أخرى تثبّتُ حقائقَ ترى أنها طُمست بفعل متعمّد أيديولوجياً. إنه على وجه الخصوص ردٌّ أو تعديلٌ لتنقيحٍ تاريخيٍّ مورسَ على "حدث" ثورة 1920 بالعراق خلال عقود طويلة. ما يقوم به عبّاس كاظم هو مناهضةُ هذا التنقيح عبر تقديم تأرخة جديدة للحدث. ينطلقُ الكتابُ من فرضية ترى أن هذه الثورةَ لحقتْها تشوّهاتٌ على مستويات عديدة، وجرى تزييفٌ متعمّدٌ لتاريخها من أطراف عدة، ولأسباب عدة، عبر عقود من تعاقب الأنظمة السياسية في حكم العراق؛ ملكيةً وجمهوريةً.
إن ثورة 1920حدث تاريخيّ جرى توظيفُه لكلّ شيء سوى أن يكون عاملاً حاسماً في تشكيل ذاكرة موحّدة وهوية جامعة للعراقيين، بل على العكس صار عاملَ فرقةٍ يدّعيها أيٌّ كان بحسب مرامٍ سياسية وطائفية. ولئن كان تنقيح التاريخ يأتي ليبلور ذاكرة وهوية جديدتين، فإنّ في هذا الكتاب دَرْءاً لمحاولة تنقيحية إنكارية أولى دعّمتْها الدولة في ظروف التنكيل بمكوّنات الشعب العراقي، كلّ مكوّن بحسب ما يمكن أن يُنكَّل به بغيةَ تنفيذ برامج سياسية محدّدة ومتطلّبة ومغطّاة بمظلّة الوطنية المثقّبة والمهترئة.
