يشير المشرق إلى الأراضي الواقعة على الشواطئ الشرقية للبحر الأبيض المتوسط، وهي تحديداً الدول الحديثة: اليونان وتركيا وسوريا ولبنان وفلسطين ومصر، التي كانت من القرن السادس عشر حتى القرن العشرين، جزءاً من الإمبراطورية العثمانية.
في عصر الحروب الدينية، كان هذا المشرق، وتحديداً موانئه، بوتقة للتجاور بين مختلف الأديان والأقوام، وانتصبت فيه المساجد والكنائس والمعابد جنباً إلى جنب، يشير المشرق إلى الأراضي الواقعة على الشواطئ الشرقية للبحر الأبيض المتوسط، وهي تحديداً الدول الحديثة: اليونان وتركيا وسوريا ولبنان وفلسطين ومصر، التي كانت من القرن السادس عشر حتى القرن العشرين، جزءاً من الإمبراطورية العثمانية.
في عصر الحروب الدينية، كان هذا المشرق، وتحديداً موانئه، بوتقة للتجاور بين مختلف الأديان والأقوام، وانتصبت فيه المساجد والكنائس والمعابد جنباً إلى جنب، وتجاورت فيه اللغات والثقافات والمواريث القومية. لكن هل كان هذا المشرق فعلاً جنة للتعايش بين الأديان والأقوام، كما في المخيلة المعاصرة الميّالة إلى الحنين إلى الماضي وتمجيده، ونسيان أهواله وصفحاته المظلمة، وكما تصوّر الروايات السكندرية المشرقية العربية الكثيرة؟ وعلى نحو أوسع من ذلك السؤال، هل كان من الممكن - في هذا الجو العالمي "الجهادي" إسلامياً و"الصليبي" مسيحياً و"الاستعماري" و"المتعالي حضارياً" أوروبياً - أن يسود تعايش حقيقي قائم على الوئام والتعارف والاحترام؟
ينتمي الكتاب الحالي إلى نوعية الكتابات التي تتباكى على المشرق الكوزموبوليتاني، ومع ذلك فإن الحقائق التاريخية التي يقدمها تنقض فكرة "جنة التعايش"، وتبرز الانفصال بين الجماعات المشرقية، وحالة الاستغلال المعمم من جانب الجاليات الأوروبية بحق الأهالي في مدن المشرق. وإن لم يكن المشرق "المتوسطي" جنة الحرية والتعايش، فإن فكرة المشرق الكوزموبوليتاني كسرت حدود الزمان والمكان، وشقت طريقها إلى مدن الغرب والشرق في صورة العولمة، وإن كانت المشارق الجديدة أكثر تعايشاً وحرية ومساواة وعدالة، وأبعد عن الاستغلال والاحتقار الديني والقومي، على الأقل مقارنة بمشرقنا القديم.
