مسيحيّون ووثنيّون يعيشون أوقاتاً عصيبة جدّاً خلال اجتياح ألاريك وجيشه لروما عام 410: ضحايا كثيرة لا تُعدّ ولا تحُصى تقع، بلا رحمة ولا شفقة، خرابٌ وتدمير، بلا هوادة.
الوثنّيون الرومان يعزون هذه الكارثة الشاملة إلى المسيحيّين، ويعتبرون أزمنة الويل والدمار "أزمنة مسيحيّة"، أي تلك التي غُيِّب فيها عن روما دور آلهتها وأصبح الدور الأوّل في مدينة الله للقديس اوغسطينس - المجلد الاول

الوثنّيون الرومان يعزون هذه الكارثة الشاملة إلى المسيحيّين، ويعتبرون أزمنة الويل والدمار "أزمنة مسيحيّة"، أي تلك التي غُيِّب فيها عن روما دور آلهتها وأصبح الدور الأوّل فيها للمسيحيّين بعد أن حرّم الأمبراطور تيودوسيوس سنة 391 عبادة آلهة الرومان وأغلق هياكلهم، ولو أنّها بقيت، بنظرهم، تحت رعاية آلهتها التقليديّين لما وقعت الكارثة.
وانبرى أوغسطينس، دحضاً لتلك المزاعم، يكتب، مستنداً إلى التاريخ الرومانيّ، إلى ما كتبه فرجيل وسلُّستس وتيت ليف، وأنّه لا يقلّ أصالة عن أخصامه، وأنَّ الحقيقة هي غير ما يدّعون.
