بطل هذه الرواية هو عمر الذي حباه الله وجها شديد الوسامة بعينين شديدتي السواد وشعرا مجعّدا أشد سوادا، وقامة طويلة وأنفا مستقيما وخدّين مُدوّرين وبشرة سمراء تميل للإحمرار ولحية ومظهرا يبعث على الوقار ويوحي بالصدق والطمأنينة.

ابتليت أسرته بسحرٍ دمّرها، أمرضَ بعضها حتى قتلهم وهجّر بعضها الآخر، ثم تموت أمه ويصير مسؤولا قبل أن يبلغ ثم يموت أبوه وأخوه بعد معاناة المرض والمسّ.. فما بقي في بيته إلا هو، ثم يهاجر فيسطو عليه قطاع الطرق ويقتلون رفاقه ويسلبونهم مالهم وجِمالهم ويأخذونه أسيرا .. ثم ينجو منهم ليقع بين يدي ساحر فيتربّى عنده ويعلّمه السحر والكفر ويبعده عن أهل الإيمان حتى يصير شيطانا من أعتى شياطين الأنس، ويمُرّ بإذلال وانتكاسات كثيرة ولولا أن تغمّده ربه برحمته وأعاده للطريق المستقيم لقضي عليه وكان من الهالكين.. فتنتهي أخيرا القصة الحزينة بفرح وحياة سعيدة يحياها هذا المُبتلى بطل القصة المدعو "عمر" لتكون دليلا ومنهاجا لكل من ابتغى السعادة؛ وهو القرب من الله جلّ في علاه.
