محمد فريد أبو حديد: قاصٌّ وكاتب مصري كبير، له الكثير من المؤلَّفات التي أَثْرت المكتبة العربية، وكان أغلبها من الروايات التاريخية.
وُلد «محمد فريد أبو حديد» بمصر عام ١٨٩٣م لأبٍ حجازي، وأمٍّ مصرية هي حفيدة شيخ الجامع الأزهر «سليم البشري». كانت بداية طفولته في «دمنهور»؛ حيث انتظم في السلك التعليمي هناك إلى أن حصل على الشهادة الابتدائية، وحصل على شهادة البكالوريا عام ١٩١٠م، ثم التحق بالقسم الأدبي بمدرسة المعلمين وتخرَّج فيها عام ١٩١٤م، ثم حصل على الإجازة في الحقوق من مدرسة الحقوق المَلكية عام ١٩٢٤م.
تدرَّج فور تخرُّجه في وظائف وزارة المعارف؛ حيث عُين مدرسًا بالتعليم الحر، ثم استقال وعمل مدرسًا بالمدارس الثانوية التابعة لوزارة الأوقاف، وانتقل عام ١٩٣٠م للعمل بقسم المراقبة على الصحف بوزارة الداخلية، وأصبح بعد ذلك سكرتيرًا عامًّا لجامعة الإسكندرية عام ١٩٤٢م، وسرعان ما عاد إلى القاهرة ليشغل منصب وكيل دار الكتب المصرية، ثم عميد معهد التربية التابع لوزارة المعارف، وفي الوقت نفسه اختير عضوًا بمَجمع اللغة العربية بالقاهرة عام ١٩٤٦م، وشغل أيضًا منصب المدير العام لكلٍّ من إدارة الثقافة، والتعليم الثانوي، والجامعة الشعبية، وإدارة مكافحة الأمية (عام ١٩٥٠م)، ومعاهد المعلمين؛ ثم عُين مساعدًا لوزير المعارف، ومع بلوغه سن التقاعد قرَّرت وزارة المعارف تعيينه مستشارًا فنيًّا لها.
له مؤلَّفات عديدة، تميزت كتاباته الروائية منها بتناولها التاريخ، مثل: «ابنة المملوك»، و«الملك الضليل»، و«أبو الفوارس عنترة بن شداد»، و«آلام جحا». وله في فن السيرة: «سيرة السيد عمر مكرم»، و«سيرة صلاح الدين الأيوبي». وله أيضًا روايتان تناولتا الحياة المصرية المعاصرة، هما: «أنا الشعب»، و«أزهار الشوك».
أما في مجال الترجمة فله «سهراب ورستم»، وهي مَلحمة للكاتب الإنجليزي «ماثيو أرنولد» قام بترجمتها في قالب مسرحي، و«الفتح العربي لمصر» من تأليف «ألفرد بتلر»، و«ماكبث» من تأليف «شكسبير».
حصل على العديد من الجوائز والأوسمة، منها: جائزة فؤاد الأول للآداب (عام ١٩٥٢م)، ووسام الاستحقاق من الطبقة الثانية (مرتين)، ووسام الاستحقاق من الطبقة الأولى، وجائزة الدولة التقديرية في الآداب (عام ١٩٦٤م).
تُوفِّي «أبو حديد» في ١٨ مايو عام ١٩٦٧م، مخلِّفًا وراءه إرثًا ثقافيًّا وأدبيًّا كبيرًا؛ تتوارثه الأجيال لتفيد منه وتبني عليه.
