الكتاب يبحث في أصل تسمية الكدية وهو مصطلح له معان شتى، فقد اختلف اللغويون والمعجميون في أصل الكلمة من حيث ارتباط دلالتها بالسائل، فمن قائل إن الكدية لفظة عربية مشتقة من أكدى، إلى ثان يرى أنها محرفة من أجدى في حين يذهب ثالث إلى أنها لفظة معرّبة .
ويقارب المؤلف الكلمة بمفردات الشحاذة والتسول والاستجداء، فيقول تعد الشحادة والتسول والكدية والاستجداء ظواهر اجتماعية قديمة جديدة، الكتاب يبحث في أصل تسمية الكدية وهو مصطلح له معان شتى، فقد اختلف اللغويون والمعجميون في أصل الكلمة من حيث ارتباط دلالتها بالسائل، فمن قائل إن الكدية لفظة عربية مشتقة من أكدى، إلى ثان يرى أنها محرفة من أجدى في حين يذهب ثالث إلى أنها لفظة معرّبة .
ويقارب المؤلف الكلمة بمفردات الشحاذة والتسول والاستجداء، فيقول تعد الشحادة والتسول والكدية والاستجداء ظواهر اجتماعية قديمة جديدة، بيد أن فيها من الطرافة والغموض ما يدفع إلى تقصي نشأتها وتتبع مراحل تطورها . ويسوق المؤلف دلالات هذه الكلمة في العديد من المواقف والأقوال، مستشهداً بكثير من النماذج الشعرية التي تحمل معنى التسول لشعراء لم يضيرهم أن يفصحوا عما يرغبون فيه من الاستجداء كقوله: ورد على لسان عاذر بن شاكر أنه كان يتخذ دفتراً يدون فيه أسماء من يستجديهم .
إن الكدية هي حرفة السائل المُلِح، التي احترفها بعض الشعراء العرب، وهم غير الشعراء الصعاليك والشطار والمتلصصون، فهؤلاء أشهرهم عروة بن الورد وتأبط شراً، أما المكدون فأبرزهم ابن الشمقمق، وابن الأعمى والزين كتاكت، ويورد المؤلف أسماء كثيرة من الشعراء الذين ينطبق عليهم هذا الوصف على مر العصور .
