ولد نيقولاي فاسيليفيتن غوغول في التاسع عشر من شهر آذار 1809 في مقاطعة بولتافا في روسيا, نشر في سنة 1831 أول مجموعة من قصصه تحت عنوان "سهرات الكوخ" فلاقت التقدير والنجاح في الأوساط الأدبية وعامة الشعب. وفي سنة 1835 نشر "ميردورود" و"الزخارف" التي تضم إلى جانب بعض مقالات نقدية وتاريخية ثلاث قصص: "الصورة.. يوميات مجنون.. وميدان نيوسكي".

وفي يوميات مجنون هذا يحاول غوغول أن يتبع حياة رجل وقع ضحية الهواجس والأفكار المظلمة التي تمضه مضضاً شديداً وتعبث في جسده وعقله وكان جنونه بدعة، بل فكرة كمنت في رأسه وتجمعت في ذهنه واستحالت مع الوقت عناداً وتشبثاً مهلكين التهماً صحته وافقداه صفاته كإنسان. لقد أنشأ هذا الرجل كراسة ضمنها قصة حياته أو مأساة خلله ومنها يستطيع المرء أن يقف على كنة عقله ويسبر حقيقة مرضه.
