تولى العباسيون الخلافة الإسلامية سنة 132 للهجرة حيث بويع لأولهم أبي العباس السفاح بالكوفة، واستمرت خلافتهم إلى سنة 656 حيث سقط عبد الله المستعصم قتيلا بين يدي هولاكو خان المغولي الذي هو من أعقاب جنكيز خان موحد التتار الخارج بهم إلى بلاد الإسلام.

جاءت الرايات السود (رايات بني العباس) من المشرق فأقعدت العباسيين على عرش بني أمية، وجاءت رايات التتار من الشرق فثلت عرشهم في بغداد زهرة المشرق وجنة الدنيا، فمن الشرق أشرق كوكب سعدهم ومن الشرق ظهر نجم نحسهم.
مكثت الدولة العباسية مائة سنة، كانت لخلفائها الكلمة العليا والسيادة التامة على جميع العالم الإسلامي (ما عدا الأندلس) يقولون فيسمع لهم، ويأمرون فيأتمر الناس، ولا يجسر أحد على مخالفتهم والوقوف في وجه جنودهم إلا منافسيهم في القرب من رسول الله ﷺ وهم بنو عمهم من آل أبي طالب وبعض الخوارج الذين كانت تخبو نارهم حينا وتلمع، ثم تجيء القوة العباسية الهائلة على ذلك بسرعة.
