لقد أتاحت لي هذه المهمة أن يقول المؤلف: يروي هذا الكتاب قصة تجربة فريدة ومثيرة عشتها في إسرائيل، عندما أوفدتني مصر كأول مبعوث للسلام الذي وقعه الرئيس الراحل أنور السادات في واشنطن في 26 مارس 1979 مع رئيس وزراء إسرائيل الأسبق مناحم بيجن، ووقعه معهما الرئيس الأمريكي السابق چيمي كارتر، بعد سنوات عديدة من العداء والحروب بين مصر والدول العربية من ناحية، و إسرائيل من ناحية أخرى.
لقد أتاحت لي هذه المهمة أن أرى إسرائيل من الداخل، وأن ألتقي بالمسئولين فيها، وأن أعرف الكثير من أهلها في غير نطاق العمل الرسمي، كما تجوَّلت في مناطق عديدة وتعرفت على بعض نواحي الحياة فيها. وإنني أحاول في هذا الكتاب أن أنقل إلى القارئ، وخاصة القارئ المصري والعربي، الصورة التي رأيتها، والانطباعات والمشاعر التي أحسست بها، كما أوضحت، في الحدود المتاحة، صورة عن المهمة التي أديتها.
ومن خلال مقابلاتي مع عدد من المصريين والعرب، لمست اهتمامًا ظاهرًا بأن يعرفوا مني، وقد عرفت في إسرائيل، الكثير عن هذه الدولة، وشعبها، وعملي فيها، لأن القطيعة القائمة بين العرب وإسرائيل نتيجة الصراع بينهما، أسهمت في إسدال حجب من الغموض على حقيقة ما يجرى هناك. وقد اختلطت الحقائق بالدعايات، العربية أحيانًا، والإسرائيلية أحيانا أخرى.. فكان هذا الكتاب
