احتوى الكتاب على تراجم شخصية من أعلام عمان ، ظهروا من القرن الهجري الأول إلى القرنين الحادي عشر والثاني عشر الهجريين، استقى المؤلف مادته من مراجع ومصادر متنوعة، تضمنت مخطوطات، ووثائق، وكتابات على الصخور، وشواهد القبور، لهذا زار كثيرا من المكتبات الخاصة في عمان، مثل : مكتبة نور الدين السالمي، ومكتبة الشيخ إبراهيم بن سعيد العبري ، ومكتبة الشيخ سالم بن حمد الحارثي؛ كما وقف على كثير من قبور الأئمة والعلماء ، في نزوى والرستاق وغيرها، فضلا عن أنه جال في كثير من الجبال والكهوف، ليقرأ ما عليها من البيانات والرسوم، وقد أشار العلامة سيف إلى تلك المصادر في كثير من الأحيان.
