لم أر أو أسمع بقصة أعجب ولا أكثر ألماً ومأساة من قصته. دونت كل ما سمعته من الناس.أمراء وحقراء. لصوص وقطاع طرق، عباد وزهاد، تجار وشعراء، كل شيء. حتى الخان في قرطبة استجوبت صاحبه دون فائدة, فقد قال لي بأن واله قد اشتراه من صاحبته قبل أن تموت. وأنه لا يعرف أحداً يعرفها. وكل ما يعرفه عن قصة ابن زريق البغدادي هو أن غرفته التي مات فيها تقع في الطابق الثاني. ثم دلني عليها. وكان ي لم أر أو أسمع بقصة أعجب ولا أكثر ألماً ومأساة من قصته. دونت كل ما سمعته من الناس.أمراء وحقراء. لصوص وقطاع طرق، عباد وزهاد، تجار وشعراء، كل شيء. حتى الخان في قرطبة استجوبت صاحبه دون فائدة, فقد قال لي بأن واله قد اشتراه من صاحبته قبل أن تموت. وأنه لا يعرف أحداً يعرفها. وكل ما يعرفه عن قصة ابن زريق البغدادي هو أن غرفته التي مات فيها تقع في الطابق الثاني. ثم دلني عليها. وكان يسكن فيها طالب نصراني جاء لتعلم اللغة العربية. فرجوته أن يخليها لي لكنه رفض. وعندما نقدت صاحب الخان أبا عبد الله الأعرج. وأظنه لقبه لأنه كان أعرج حقاً. دينارين ذهبيين، توصل إلى حل مرض للطالب، إذ تبادلنا غرفتينا لليلة واحدة، فنام هو في غرفتي ونمت أنا في غرفته. والأصح أنه نام في غرفتي مرتاحاً مطمئناً، ولم أنم أنا في غرفته!
الحقيقة أن عينيّ لم تغمضا لحظة واحدة في تلك الليلة، وتخيلت الليلة الأخيرة لأبي الحسن علي بن زريق البغدادي وهو يتقلى على هذا الفراش حتى فاضت روحه يأساً وكمداً وحنيناً وأسفا. والله لقد كادت تفيض روحي أنا أيضاً في تلك الليلة فيكون خبري وخبره واحدا.
