يكاد يتفق علماء المصريات على أن عصر "الدولة الوسطى" (2055- 1795 ق.م) يمثل أزهى عصور الأدب في "مصر القديمة" فإلى هذه الحقبة تؤرخ أروع المتون الأدبية والفلسفية التي كتبها الحكماء والأدباء المصريون. كما أن اللغة المصرية- آنذاك- أضحت أكثر مرونة وجزالة، وتخلصت من الكثير من تعقيداتها العتيقة. وقد أبدع لنا الأديب المصري- وقتئذ- أروع الحكايات والأساطير والتأملات والتعاليم، وكذلك التراتيل الدينية والدنيوية.. إلخ. وكلها موضوعات تتميز بالعمق والرصانة الأديبة، وكذلك الرمزية السامية. ويمكننا القول إن فضل "مصر" على شعوب الدنيا لا يدانيه ما قدمت أية حضارة أخرى في العالم القديم، فقد علمت "مصر" سائر الشعوب الكتابة، حيث ابتكر المصري القديم أول لغة مكتوبة ترجع إلى أكثر من حمسة آلاف سنة، وتضم -في ذات الوقت- أول حروف هجائية عرفها الإنسان. كما قدمت "مصر" للبشرية أول أوراق للكتابة، مصنوعة من سيقان نبات البردي، والتي كانت تعد -آنذاك- نقلة حضارية غير مسبوقة، بدلاً من الحفر على الجدران والصخور والذي يتطلب الكثير من المهارة والحذق، ويتناول هذا الكتاب أروع وأشهر الأساطير وحكايات التراث الشعبي التي ذاعت إبان الحقبة الفرعونية، إضافة إلى الحكايات التي رواها الرحالة والمؤرخون القدامى، لاسيما "هيرودوت" والتي سمعوها نم المصريين. وقد اختلطت بعض هذه الروايات بشئ من الخرافات وكذلك الافتراءات في بعض الأحيان..
