بيّنت مليكة الزغل في هذا الكتاب كيف جابه علماء الأزهر -أهم الجامعات الدينية في العالم السني- دولة حديثة سعت إلى إخضاعهم لمنطقها، إنه منطق دولة مستبدة لا تنفصل عن الدين، تتحكم فيه لكنها في ذات الآن تبذل له ما يلزم من الدعم، لأن "الإسلام دبن الدولة الرسمي" كما ينص الدستور المصري. وأبرزت خلافًا لما شاع عن تلك الفترةمن تصورات، كيف أعرب علماء الأزهر، رغم القيود المفروضة عليهم م بيّنت مليكة الزغل في هذا الكتاب كيف جابه علماء الأزهر -أهم الجامعات الدينية في العالم السني- دولة حديثة سعت إلى إخضاعهم لمنطقها، إنه منطق دولة مستبدة لا تنفصل عن الدين، تتحكم فيه لكنها في ذات الآن تبذل له ما يلزم من الدعم، لأن "الإسلام دبن الدولة الرسمي" كما ينص الدستور المصري. وأبرزت خلافًا لما شاع عن تلك الفترةمن تصورات، كيف أعرب علماء الأزهر، رغم القيود المفروضة عليهم من قبل الدولة- عن إرادة قوية في المشاركة في الجدالات الاجتماعية الهامة، وفي القيام بدور مركزي على المستويين الأخلاقي والسياسي، وفي أن يكونوا حراس الإسلام خلال النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين. وكشفت كذلك عن التنوع الذي وسم مواقفهم من نظام استبدادي يتحكم في مؤسستهم، وأثبتت وجود من سمتهم بـ "علماء الأطراف"، أولئك الذين نأوا بأنفسهم علنًا عن النظام المصري عن طريق التحالف مع مختلف تيارات الإسلام السياسي.
