يمكننا أن نوضح موقعنا الجغرافي باستخدام الإحداثيات الرقمية، لكن هل سيغني ذلك عن إظهارنا له على الخريطة الجغرافية؟ الإجابة هي بالطبع لا، فالخريطة كانت وما زالت الخيار الأول في فهم المكان. إن العالم الحقيقي معقدٌ بحق، فعند التحليق جواً أعلى سطح كوكبنا نستطيع أن نلتمس هذا التعقيد بالنظر إلى الأرض. جبالٌ وسهولٌ وأنهارٌ ووديان تتوغل في بحارنا وعلى أنحاء من اليابسة التي نعيش علي يمكننا أن نوضح موقعنا الجغرافي باستخدام الإحداثيات الرقمية، لكن هل سيغني ذلك عن إظهارنا له على الخريطة الجغرافية؟ الإجابة هي بالطبع لا، فالخريطة كانت وما زالت الخيار الأول في فهم المكان. إن العالم الحقيقي معقدٌ بحق، فعند التحليق جواً أعلى سطح كوكبنا نستطيع أن نلتمس هذا التعقيد بالنظر إلى الأرض. جبالٌ وسهولٌ وأنهارٌ ووديان تتوغل في بحارنا وعلى أنحاء من اليابسة التي نعيش عليها. بالإضافة إلى ذلك كله، دشن الإنسان هذه الأرض بالمدن والشوارع والظواهر الحضرية المختلفة. يدفعنا ذلك إلى التساؤل حقاً كيف يستطيع الإنسان التحكم بهذه البيئة المعقدة وفهمها؟ الإجابة هي بتبسيطها وتمثيلها بصورة يسهل فهمها. لكن كيف ذلك؟! قبل مباريات كرة القدم، يقوم المدرب دائماً بتوضيح مراكز اللاعبين وتوزيعهم المكاني على لوحة صغيرة تمثل الملعب الكبير الذي سيجري اللاعبون عليه، وذلك لكي يستطيعوا فهم أدوارهم ومواقعهم، هذا هو الدور الذي تقوم به نظم المعلومات الجغرافية تحديداً، فهي وسيلة تمثل لنا تعقيدات العالم المختلفة على شكل نماذج رقمية (خرائط مبسطة) تجسد الواقع وتسهل فهمه، وهي بذلك أداة تمكنا من فهم عالمنا الحاضر، وتصور لنا كيف كانت الأمور عليه في الماضي، وما قد يكون عليه شكل العالم في المستقبل. وذلك بتفردها في ربط المعلومة بالمكان. كل هذه القدرات تساعدنا على إدارة حياتنا بشكل أفضل مما يساعدنا على التخطيط لها ولمستقبلنا بصورة أكثر إتقاناً. يمثل هذا الكتاب أولى الخطوات لبداية الإبحار في هذا العلم، كما يعتبر أحد المحاولات العربية الأولى لشرح برنامج ArcGIS Pro الإصدار المطور لشركة Esri الأمريكية، والتي تقدم المنتجات الأكثر تداولاً في هذا المجال.
